Lions look to open conference play with a win on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium

HAMMOND, La.  – The No. 21/23 Southeastern Louisiana football team will open Southland Conference play on Saturday, hosting league foe Lamar at 7 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium.
 
The game between the Lions (1-1) and the visiting Cardinals (2-1) will air on ESPN+. It also can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (KSLU-FM (90.9), Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM WFPR), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the Radio FX and TuneIn Radio apps.
 
The SLU-Lamar game will also double as the annual Hall of Fame Game. The 2019 Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame class of Bryan Bennett (football), Stefan Lopez (baseball), Karin Smith Gadberry (softball) and Simmie Yarborough (football) will be inducted in a private ceremony earlier in the day and recognized at halftime of the Lions-Cardinals contest.
 
It will also be Solid Gold Saturday in Strawberry Stadium. Fans are encouraged to wear gold and the first 500 fans will receive free gold t-shirts courtesy of McDonald's and Southeastern Athletics.

Southeastern suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday, falling 40-29 at Ole Miss. The Lions trailed by as many as 17 early in the second half, but cut the lead to 34-29 heading into the final period. The host Rebels held off SLU with a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter. The 29 points were the most Southeastern has scored versus an SEC opponent since the program returned in 2003.
 
Chason Virgil connected with Juwan Petit-Frere and Bransen Schwebel on touchdown passes, while Marcus Cooper and Devonte Williams each rushed for scores. On defense, Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund was named Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week after finishing with 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
 
The Lion offense is averaging 32.0 points and 379.5 yards per contest heading into Saturday's game. Virgil has thrown for 473 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions on 40-of-68 passing through the first two games. Williams, who is also the Lions' leading rusher, has caught a team high 11 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown, while Austin Mitchell (10-153-1 TD) and Schwebel (8-65-2 TD) are the other top pass catchers for SLU.
 
On defense, Southeastern is yielding 27.0 points and 470.0 yards per game. Mike Mason leads the team with 20 tackles and is joined in the top five by Donniel Ward-Magee (16 tackles), Tre' Spann (16), Alexis Ramos (14 tackles) and Josh Carr Jr. (13).
 
Carr and Adeyemi-Berglund lead the team with 4.5 tackles for loss each, while Ramos and Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund share team-high honors with two sacks.  In the secondary, Ward-Magee, Ferlando Jordan and Shawntrez Spates each have two pass breakups, while Jordan and Spates each have an interception.
 
Lamar, which reached the FCS playoffs last season, opened the 2019 season with home wins over Bethel (65-16) and Mississippi Valley State (23-20, OT). Last Saturday, the Cardinals opened the road portion of their schedule with a 62-3 defeat at FBS No. 16 Texas A&M.
 
Jordan Hoy (49-for-87, 534 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT) engineers a Lamar offense that is averaging 30.3 points and 430.7 yards per game. Kirkland Banks is LU's top receiver, leading the team with 11 catches for 122 yards. Myles Wanza (36 carries, 171 yards, 1 TD) and Hoy (30-124-5 TD) anchor a Cardinal ground game that is averaging 223.3 yards per outing.
 
The Lamar defense is allowing 32.7 points and 377.0 yards per contest. Dallas Martin has a team-high 32 tackles, while Michael Lawson leads LU with two interceptions. Daniel Crosley holds the team lead with 5.0 tackles for loss, sharing team-high honors with Abel Daily with two sacks apiece.
 
Southeastern is 10-4 all-time versus the Cardinals and has won six of the last seven meetings. Last season, SLU outscored LU, 20-7, in the second half to pull away for a 30-24 victory.
