SLU Heads North to Face Memphis and Little Rock

Lady Lions Prepare for 18th-Ranked Memphis

9/11/2019 10:00:00 AM

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team takes to the road this week to face 18th-ranked Memphis Thursday night at 7 p.m. and Little Rock Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

SLU (1-3-1) looks to rebound after a tough loss at home to South Alabama, 3-0, Sunday night. USA outshot the Lady Lions 18-6 in route to the win.

Despite the tough night, the Lady Lions' defense has more than held their own against an extremely difficult schedule. SLU allowed just two goals at 10th-ranked Tennessee Sept. 5 while withstanding 18 shots and 11 on goal.

Southeastern goalkeeper Nadine Maher has been a terrific last line of defense. The junior from Dublin, Ireland, is second in the Southland Conference in save percentage (.759) saving 22 of 29 shots on goal in five matches including nine saves against Tennessee.

However, things won't get any easier for SLU Thursday night when the Lady Lions take the 340-mile five hour bus ride to take on Memphis (5-1-0). The Lady Tigers boast wins over Mississippi State, Ole Miss and North Texas and dominated opponents through the first six matches outscoring opposition, 16-3.

Southeastern has faced Memphis three times (0-3) with the most recent being Aug. 19, 2016 when the Lady Tigers defeated SLU, 4-1.

Memphis is led by junior forward Clarissa Larisey. The Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native has scored seven goals and posted hat tricks against Mississippi State and Little Rock.

Following Thursday's match, SLU will make the two-hour bus ride to Little Rock, Arkansas to face the Little Rock Trojans (1-4-1). Southeastern and Little Rock are tied in the all-time series 3-3-1 but the two teams haven't played since Sept. 18, 2009. The Trojans had the upper hand winning 2-0.

Little Rock, like SLU has had a difficult schedule early on. The Trojans have dropped matches to Memphis, TCU, Tulsa and Missouri State but are coming of a 2-2 tie to reigning Southland Conference Regular Season champion Central Arkansas Sunday at home.

Trojans' goalkeeper Julia Curatolo, has been equally tested like Maher. The freshman from Clermont, Florida has faced 94 shots in seven matches with 23 saves while allowing 11 goals. Despite the four losses, Curatolo and the Trojans have two shutouts on their resume this season.

Fans can follow the action of both matches with live stats available at the SLU women's soccer schedule page.

The Lady Lions will depart for Memphis Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. and are slated to return home following the match at Little Rock at 11 p.m. Saturday night.

After Saturday's match, the Lady Lions will have six days off before opening the Southland schedule Friday, Sept. 20 at McNeese.
