NATCHITOCHES, La. – Ashley Davis finished second in the women's shot put Saturday during day two of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships at Walter P. Ledet Track hosted by Northwestern State.
Davis, the defending outdoor conference champion, finished with a mark of 52 feet, 6.75 inches (16.02m) just behind Abilene Christian's Kayla Melgar (52-8, 16.05m). Davis, a junior from Watson, Louisiana, scored eight points for SLU.
Kristian Jackson got SLU three points in the shot put finishing sixth. The freshman from Zachary, Louisiana, threw 46-8.25 (14.23m)
On the men's side,
Thomas Nedow finished seventh in the shot put to give the men two points. The freshman from Brockville, Canada, set a personal best of 54-2 (16.51m)
In the men's prelims,
Zach Barthel (1500m),
Donovan Storr (400m) and
Gerald Coleman (400m hurdle) each advanced to the finals
Barthel qualified for the 1500m finals Sunday at 12:30 p.m. by running a 3:58.26. The mark was also a personal best for the freshman from Kenner, Louisiana.
Storr, a junior from Andros, Bahamas, advanced to the finals with a time of 47.94 finishing second in his heat. The 400m finals are Sunday at 1 p.m.
Coleman, the conference leader in the 400m hurdles entering the meet, ran a 53:10 to advance to Sunday's finals at 2:10 p.m. The junior from New Orleans, Louisiana had the second fastest qualifying time in the prelims.
"We had some really good performances today highlighted by the podium finish for Ashley," said SLU track head coach
Corey Mistretta. "Ashley continues to shine for us. We qualified a few guys to the finals tomorrow and are looking forward to some exciting races. We also have a few field events remaining where we are hoping to put up some good performances along with both relays for the men and women. I know there are some who didn't perform as well as they were hoping today, so I'm excited to see how they respond tomorrow."
