MCKINNEY, Texas – Joris Etlin shot a 71 (-1) for the Southeastern Louisiana golf team to take the tournament lead after day one of the Southland Conference Championship Monday at the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
 
The Lions are tied for second place with reigning conference champion Sam Houston State at +17. Lamar leads the tourney at +13.
 
Etlin, a senior, started the round with seven pars and two bogeys on the front nine holes. The Frejus, France native, then rallied to birdie the 10^th, 11^th, and 13^th holes before finishing with five straight pars.
 
The Southland Conference Golfer of the Month's -1 Monday was just the sixth time a player has shot a round under par in the conference tournament since 2016. The 71 was the best score by a Lion in the conference championship since James Anstiss shot a 68 (-4) April 18, 2016 in the first round.
 
"He really played that well," said SLU head coach Jake Narro. "He played like someone that is leading the tournament and I'm happy he is in the position. His iron play was absolutely exceptional. You just have to hang in there at a course like this because the wind is so challenging for everybody and we battled all day long."
 
SLU Sophomore Logan Kuehn had a terrific first round as well shooting a 75 (+3) and is tied for 6^th place. The Lake Charles, Louisiana native recorded three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey to stay in contention after 18 holes.  
 
Sophomore Kris Kerr shot a 77 (+5) to keep him in the mix. The Loranger, Louisiana native, is tied for 19^th place with five others.
"It was just a good all-around day for everyone," said Narro. "Everybody battled through some spots here and there to keep their rounds a float and helped put us in good position going into tomorrow with a chance at this thing."
 
The tournament, which was originally slated for three days, will conclude Tuesday beginning at 7 a.m. with the final 36 holes due to rain in the forecast Wednesday.
