Gaconi earns second conference honor of 2019

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana outfielder Preston Faulkner earned Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honors and teammate Corey Gaconi claimed Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.

The Lions (21-19, 12-6 Southland) picked up a 12-3 nonconference win Tuesday at McNeese, split a Friday doubleheader at home with Nicholls and rolled to an 11-1 win Saturday in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Faulkner hit .529 (9-for-17) in four contests, stroking five doubles and scoring five runs. He also picked up three RBIs and a pair of walks. His five hits over the weekend came against a Colonels' pitching staff that entered the weekend boasting the league's best ERA.

At McNeese, the sophomore from Denham Springs, Louisiana, became the first Lion hitter with three doubles in a single game since Jameson Fisher accomplished the feat during the 2014 season.

Gaconi turned in another sterling performance in Friday's series opener, tossing his fifth career complete game. The senior from Metairie, Louisiana, scattered four hits while fanning a career-high 11 batters. The lone run he coughed up to Nicholls was unearned, scoring on a fielding error with two outs in the fourth inning.

The strike-throwing right-hander ranks third in the Southland with a 2.20 ERA. He also ranks seventh nationally in fewest walks issued per nine innings (0.90) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.29). Gaconi, who earned conference pitcher of the week honors earlier this season (April 1), now ranks 10th all-time at Southeastern in innings pitched (267) and is tied for 10th with 38 career starts.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted.

The Lions travel to New Orleans for a rematch Tuesday with in-state foe Tulane, resuming conference play Friday with the opener of a three-game set at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
