HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team closed out its 2019 spring practice with an efficient Spring Game Saturday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.
 
Southeastern had highlights on both sides of the ball in the 40-minute scrimmage that closed out the 15-practice spring schedule. Head coach Frank Scelfo was overall very pleased with what he saw from his team on Saturday.
 
"The number one positive was that we didn't turn the ball over at all today and I thought we executed pretty crisply," Scelfo commented. "We've seen the energy level be great throughout the spring and you could see it on the field today. Our playmakers did a nice job of making big plays and we were able to get out of today injury-free."
 
While Scelfo was overall positive about his team's performance, there are still some areas which need improvement.
 
"We had too many penalties today and we have to clean that up," Scelfo said. "We missed a couple of times on some big plays and that's going to be cleaned up as we continue to get more comfortable playing together as a team. Overall, this spring was a huge step forward for our program and we can build on this as we move into the offseason and get ready for fall."
 
Southeastern opened the day with a big play, as Virgil lateraled to former quarterback and now full-time receiver Lorenzo Nunez. Nunez showed he still had the arm and threw it back to Virgil for a 70-yard touchdown.
 
Later in the opening quarter, Virgil connected with multi-time All-American and All-Southland performer Juwan Petit-Frere for a 22-yard touchdown.
 
Early in the second quarter, newcomer Mason Schucker found Jacq'co Price for a 16-yard score. A Xavier Lewis tackle for loss opened the next drive, but newcomer Cole Kelley found Marquis Williams for an 18-yard reception. However, Kelley missed a shot in the end zone to 2018 All-Southland Conference tight end Bransen Schwebel and SLU had to settle for a field goal attempt that missed wide right to end the half.
To open the third quarter, Anthony Spurlock hauled in a 50-yard pass from Chris Penton. However, the Lion defense again answered, as a sack by Feletoa Ailua forced a 41-year field goal by Lane Perrin.
 
On the ensuing possession, Schucker was sacked by Marquis Johnson. A near interception by Keith Benjamin and a Tre' Spann tackle for loss ended the drive and the quarter.
 
On the final possession, Virgil hooked up with Austin Mitchell on a 14-yard catch, scrambled for 19 yards and then found Nunez on a 28-yard touchdown to end the Spring Game.
 
Southeastern will open the 2019 season at home, hosting Jacksonville State on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
