BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – D.J. Ruffin won the long jump and high jump for the Southeastern Louisiana track team Sunday during day one of the Southland Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Ruffin, a Gautier, Mississippi product, claimed the long jump title with a mark of 25 feet, 1.25 inches (7.65m). The senior added to the day winning the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 9.75 inches (2.08m), his first time competing in the high jump since April 15, 2017. The Gautier High School grad also qualified for the 400m final Monday at 12:20 p.m.
"D.J. has been an absolute superstar for us," said second-year SLU track head coach
Corey Mistretta. "What he did today was almost unbelievable. D.J. constantly wants to do whatever he can do to help the team be successful. It is hard to put into words what actually happened without actually being there to witness it. I am so proud of him. He epitomizes what it means to have the heart of a Lion."
Grant O'Callaghan finished third in the 5000m. The Flowery Branch, Georgia native ran a 14:42.76, right behind Central Arkansas's Markus Schweikert (14:41.26) for second place.
SLU Junior
Donovan Storr will join Ruffin in the 400m final. The Andros, Bahamas native ran a 48.00, the second best time in the preliminaries to earn a spot in the final Monday.
Senior
Cliff Resias qualified for the 200m final by running a 21.58 in the preliminaries Monday. The Nassau, Bahamas native will compete in the final Monday at 1:20 p.m.
Devin King, a Kentwood, Louisiana native, finished second in the pole vault. The senior turned in a 17-8.5 (5.40m) mark just behind Stephen F. Austin's Branson Ellis (18-0.5, 5.50m). Freshman Riccardo Clotz finished fourth for the Lions posting a personal best, 17-4.5 (5.3m)
"Our men were very strong today," said Mistretta. "We are very excited about the possibilities of tomorrow."
For the women,
Alexia Stein finished fifth in the weight throw. The senior from Baldwin City, Kansas, set a personal best of 59-3 (18.06m).
Day two of the Southland Indoor meet continues Monday at 10 a.m. with the women's shot put. SLU's
Ashley Davis is top-ranked in the Southland in the shot put going into the event.
"The women will not go without a fight," said Mistretta. I have no doubt they will lay everything on the line to help the team score tomorrow."
