HAMMOND, La. – A home-heavy slate, featuring nonconference games against stalwarts Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, UL Lafayette, South Alabama and Tulane, highlights the 2020 Southeastern Louisiana baseball schedule, head coach
Matt Riser announced Tuesday.
"Scheduling is a balance of not only home games and road games, but RPI games," Riser said. "We've got some quality opponents coming in to play at our ballpark. Ones that are high-RPI clubs that will play for championships in their leagues and have a chance to play in Regionals by the end of the season."
Southeastern opens the season on the road for the first time since Riser's first season, playing a pair of games in Lafayette, Louisiana. Opening Night, Feb. 14, the Lions face host UL Lafayette before turning around Saturday for a neutral site contest against Louisiana Tech.
The home opener follows on Feb. 18 against the Ragin' Cajuns. Southeastern hosts Jacksonville in a three-game set before hitting the road for a pair of games at ULM. Returning home, the Lions host NCAA Regional-participant Stony Brook in a weekend series to wrap up the month of February.
Southeastern then hits the road for five-straight games, including a game, March 3, at NCAA Regional-participant LSU. The opening series of Southland Conference play is March 6-8 at Central Arkansas.
After wrapping up the road trip with a game at Louisiana Tech, the Lions return home for a nonconference series against Valparaiso. Back-to-back home games follow, March 17-18, against NCAA Regional-participant Southern Miss and College World Series-participant Mississippi State.
Southeastern returns to the road for conference action, March 20-22, at Abilene Christian. A season-high seven-game homestand follows the trip to Texas, with South Alabama (March 24), Stephen F. Austin (March 27-29) and Louisiana Tech (March 31) make appearances in Hammond.
The annual Pontchartrain Bowl rivalry series against New Orleans is slated for April 3-5, with the first two games being played at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field and the finale moving to the New Orleans lakefront.
Southeastern bounces back to Hammond for a game against Tulane, April 7, before embarking on a season-high eight-game road trip. The Lions will make stops at Northwestern State (April 9-11), Southern Miss (April 15), Nicholls (April 17-19) and Tulane (April 22) before finally returning home for a Southland series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Games at South Alabama, Sam Houston State and McNeese lead into a six-game homestand against Incarnate Word and Lamar to wrap up the regular season.
Southeastern will play more than 50 percent of its games in the friendly confines of Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in 2020. The Lions have 20 games against in-state competition, eight games against NCAA postseason participants and 16 games against teams that finished in the RPI Top-100 last season.
