HAMMOND, La. – For the fourth time in the past five games, the Southeastern women's basketball team will be on the road, as the Lady Lions travel to Sam Houston State for a 6:30 p.m. Southland Conference contest Wednesday in Huntsville, Texas.
A win Wednesday would allow SLU (8-10, 3-4 Southland) to move up in the standings, as the host Bearkats (9-8, 4-3 Southland) occupy the spot just above the Lady Lions on the league ledger. Southeastern is also looking for its first Southland road win of 2018-19.
The Lady Lions looked like they were going to end their road woes last Saturday at Northwestern State, leading 43-39 heading into the final period. However, NSU outscored the visiting Lady Lions, 19-4, in the final quarter to earn a 58-47 victory.
Southeastern is averaging 56.6 points per contest heading into Wednesday's contest.
Celica Sterling leads the way with 16.4 points per game, good for third in the Southland Conference.
Jaclyn Scholvin (9.0 ppg),
Charliee Dugas (7.8 ppg) and
Caitlyn Williams (7.6 ppg) are the other top scorers for SLU.
Much of Sterling's damage has been done from behind the arc. The Baton Rouge native and second-generation Lady Lion leads the Southland with 49 three-point field goals made.
SHSU counters with a balanced offense that is averaging 72.3 points per contest behind the trio of Jaylonn Walker (14.6 ppg), Amber Leggett (12.1 ppg) and Jennifer Oramas (10.9 ppg).
Oramas doubles as the Bearkats' top playmaker, averaging 4.3 assists per game – good for fifth in the Southland rankings. Oramas is joined in the top 10 by her Southeastern counterparts
Tyler Morrison (3.5 apg, 6
th) and
Jaclyn Scholvin (3.4 apg, 8
th).
Southeastern will have to continue to improve its rebounding, as the Lady Lions heads to Huntsville with a minus-7.7 rebounding margin, where the Bearkats await boasting a plus-4.3 margin on the boards. Wednesday's contest will feature two of the Southland's top rebounders in SHSU's Lydia Baxter (8.2 rpg, 3
rd) and SLU's
Caitlyn Williams (7.5 rpg, 5
th).
Defensively, SLU is allowing 62.8 points and forcing 18.4 turnovers per game, while SHSU yields 66.5 points and causes 22.0 turnovers per contest. Walker leads the Bearkats with 48 steals, while Scholvin has a team-high 38 for the Lady Lions.
Wednesday will be the 40
th meeting between the Lady Lions and Bearkats with SLU holding a 21-18 advantage. SHSU has controlled the all-time series in recent years, winning nine of the last 10 meetings between the two Southland rivals. Southeastern's last win in Huntsville came in the 2009-10 season.
Following Wednesday's contest, Southeastern will return home to host Nicholls for a 1 p.m. contest in the University Center. Wednesday's game will be seen on ESPN3 and can also be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at

Saturday will also be Youth Day in the University Center, as all fans 12 and under will receive free admission. Any fans with a valid middle school, junior high or high school ID will receive a $3 ticket.
