HAMMOND, La. – After a 1400 mile road trip last weekend to Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team returns home to the friendly confines of Strawberry Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-2-2, 1-0-1 in the Southland).
Â
Both SLU and AMCC have been nearly unbreakable defensively as they rank in the top 3 in the Southland Conference in goals allowed. The Lady Islanders are second allowing seven goal in eight matches (0.82 GPM). The Lady Lions aren't far behind allowing nine in eight matches (0.97 GPM).
Â
Southeastern (4-3-2, 1-1-1) is coming off a Texas road trip that saw them drop a heartbreaker 1-0 at Abilene Christian and tie Incarnate Word 1-1.
Â
"It was a really long road trip," said second year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "We've got 19 lower classmen and it's the first time they've made that long of a trip. But it was a good experience. It was definitely a learning experience to play two games that competitively with such a quick turnaround. We were really good front to back on the defensive end both matches and we made them earn their goals. Overall we were pleased with the effort we got all weekend it just wasn't necessarily the results we were hoping for."
Â
AMCC turned in two shutouts last week beating Sam Houston 1-0 in overtime and tying Stephen F. Austin 0-0.
Â
"They (AMCC) are a team that really is defensively solid," said McBride. "They are really a tough team to break down. We're going to have to be really creative on Friday night if we want to score on some opportunities."
Â
SLU leads the all-time series with the Islanders 4-1-1 with last year's game ending in a scoreless tie.
Friday is also Alumni Night at Strawberry Stadium, as all former Lady Lions in attendance will be honored in conjunction with the match.
Â
Southeastern goalkeeper
Nadine Maher has been spectacular. The sophomore from Dublin, Ireland has 27 saves in three conference matches and 51 overall which ranks her second in the Southland Conference. Houston Baptist's Alanis Guevara, whom the Lady Lions will face Sunday at 1 p.m. at home, leads the conference with 58 saves. .
Â
HBU (4-5-1, 2-0-1) was terrific last weekend rolling past Stephen F. Austin 3-0, who was picked second in the Southland Conference Pre-Season Poll, and then battled Sam Houston to a 1-1 tie.
Â
"Houston Baptist is coming off a great weekend with the shutout at Stephen F Austin. They are a good offensive team so we will have to be ready the entire weekend."
Â
SLU and HBU fought for 110 minutes last year to a 2-2 tie in a bizarre match that saw Houston Baptist score when Southeastern's goalkeeper had a kick blocked that caromed into the net giving HBU a 2-1 lead. The Lady Lions, however, tied the match at 2-2 a few minutes later.
