Box Score DENTON, Texas – The North Texas Mean Green (2-0-1) scored three times in the first half to pull away early and beat the Southeastern Louisiana (1-1-0) women's soccer team Friday night, 4-0.
The Mean Green scored on goals by Taylor Torres, Aaliyah Nolan and Elle Marie DeFrain in the first half.
The Lady Lions, despite the tough first half, had some opportunities. In the 16
th minute, freshman
Claire Huston's free kick was deflected out of bounds just wide of the North Texas net. In the 22
nd minute, junior
Amber Marinero got a good shot off from 20 yards out but it rolled just left of the goal post.
Defensively, SLU goalkeeper
Nadine Maher made a terrific play on a breakaway opportunity for North Texas. The sophomore from Dublin, Ireland was the only thing standing between the Mean Green's Ariel Diaz and the goal but Maher slid in and knocked the ball away for a tremendous save.
In the second half, Nolan scored for the second time on an assist from Torres in the 61
st minute to make it 4-0.
The Lady Lions suffered the same fate that many of their fellow Southland Conference opponents have been dealt. North Texas, the reigning Conference USA Tournament champions and 2015 and 2017 NCAA tournament participants, improved to 48-2 all-time against the Southland.
"We knew how strong they were going to be," said second year SLU head coach Chris McBride. "We wanted to test ourselves early in the season and we thought we played well and competed well but they are so fast and difficult to defend and match up with. But overall we're pleased with the facts that our girls played hard for 90 minutes and were not intimidated in the least."
SLU will look to bounce back Monday night on the road against Southern at 7 p.m. For live updates follow SLU Athletics on twitter @sluathletics.
