HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team will begin its second season under head coach Chris McBride Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. SLU will travel to Jackson, Mississippi to face the Jackson State Lady Tigers in a rematch from last year's season opener.
The Lady Lions dominated the 2017 opener winning 3-0. They pressured JSU the entire match with 27 shots (16 shots on goal) to just two for the Lady Tigers. Southeastern leads the all-time series 8-0 outscoring the Lady Tigers 31-2. SLU, however, has 12 newcomers including nine freshmen and three sophomore transfers.
"It was a great start to the season last year," said McBride. "But we have a lot of newcomers and a lot of players in different spots this year so we have to take last year's match with a grain of salt."
After the Friday matinee with JSU, the Lady Lions will prepare for the home opener Sunday night at 7 p.m. against the Alcorn State Lady Braves.
SLU faced the Lady Braves in 2014 on the road and won convincingly 9-0. The Lady Lions lead the all-time series 7-0 and have never allowed a goal to ASU outscoring the Lady Braves 58-0.
"The key for us is to focus on getting better each and every match," said McBride. "The opponent is not my concern. We respect everyone we play but early in the season we simply want to make sure that we are improving in every phase match to match. And if we are doing that, then the results come."
SLU is coming off a terrific showing in Saturday's scrimmage at South Alabama where the defense was tremendous. USA attempted 17 shots and seven on goal and only converted once thanks to terrific goalkeeping by sophomore transfer
Nadine Maher and redshirt freshman
Bailey Scott.
"We did some really good things in that match, "said McBride. "But there are still come areas I would like to see us improve on this weekend and get started the right way. It was a very good preseason and the girls worked really hard. But now we just have to take it one match at a time and get better each day."
