Lady Lions’ Defense Outstanding, Despite 1-0 Loss to South Alabama in Scrimmage

SLU sharp in final tune up

8/12/2018 8:24:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team gave South Alabama all they could handle falling 1-0 on a goal by USA's Brenna McPartland in the 59th minute Saturday in the final scrimmage before the season opener.

Despite USA's aggressive offensive attack including 17 shots and seven on goal, SLU refused to give in.

The Lady Lions turned away several scoring opportunities by South Alabama including a spectacular save by goalkeeper Bailey Scott. USA had a chance from point-blank range on a header but Scott, a red-shirt freshman from Mandeville, Louisiana and Fontainebleau High School, made a diving save to her right. Scott finished the match with four saves while sophomore goalkeeper Nadine Maher saved two for the Lady Lions.

SLU's had several scoring opportunities including one in the 39th minute when freshman Claire Huston's shot on goal was saved by Justice Sanford, and in the 67th minute when Lexie Gundersen had her shot sail just over the top of the net.

"It was a really good performance," said second year head coach Chris McBride. "It's always good to get a chance to see quality opponents before the season. I thought we competed well the entire match but we've got a few things we need to work on. However, right now I feel pretty good about where we are going into the season."

The Lady Lions will begin preparations Monday for their season opening match on the road against the Jackson State Lady Tigers Friday at 3 p.m. in Jackson, Mississippi. SLU defeated the Lady Tigers 3-0 in last year's opener at home.

"They (Jackson State) are going to be athletic," said McBride. "They are going to get up and down the field and should give us a great challenge to open up the season."
