TAMPA, Fla. – Southeastern Louisiana junior
Adrian Williams qualified in the men's javelin for the NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Championships Saturday at the USF Track and Field Stadium.
Williams, in his first year with SLU out of Butler's Village, St. Kitts, qualified by finishing 12
th in the men's javelin competition. The top 12 finishers at each preliminary round advance to the national meet, set for June 6-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Williams, the first Lion javelin thrower to advance to the national meet since Lars Laursen in 2006, will be one of two Lions competing at the NCAA Championships, as senior teammate
Devin King qualified in the pole vault on Thursday. Williams and King's participation next month will mark the fourth straight year that SLU has taken multiple student-athletes to the national meet.
Williams did all he needed to do on his first throw of the day, securing a spot with a throw of 206 feet, 4 inches (62.89 meters). Williams edged East Tennessee State junior Benjamin Johnson (205-5 / 62.62 m) for the East's final spot in Eugene.
Williams was one of four Southeastern student-athletes in action on Saturday. In the 200 meters, senior Cliff Resais finished 23
rd. The Nassau, Bahamas native clocked a time of 21.13 seconds.
In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Vigdis Jondottir finished 24
th. The Reykjavik, Iceland product's second toss of the competition was her best, as she posted a throw of 189-10 (57.87 m).
The Lions' final competitor of the meet also saw his second throw being his best, as junior
Stevon Crooks finished 37
th in the men's shot put. Crooks, who hails from Westmoreland, Jamaica, recorded a throw of 55-8.5 (16.98 m).
Both Williams and King will compete on the opening day of the NCAA Championships on Wednesday, June 6. King's men's pole vault competition is scheduled for 7 p.m. (Central) with Williams competing in the men's javelin at 7:45 p.m. All of the action at the national meet will be seen on the ESPN family of networks.
The men's pole vault is scheduled to be shown on ESPNU, while the men's javelin is scheduled for ESPN2. Network schedules are subject to change.
