HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana blasted four home runs and broke the school record for stolen bases Tuesday en route to a 12-9 win over South Alabama at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (35-19) and South Alabama (29-21) left just four zeros on the scoreboard in the game.
Drew Avans (4-for-5) scored four runs and
Taylor Schwaner (3-for-3) drove in six.
Will Warren (1-1), the second of four Lion pitchers, earned the win.
Bryce Tassin, the only one of nine total pitchers in the game to turn in a scoreless outing, earned his team-leading sixth save of the season. Zach Melton (2-4), the second of five Jaguar pitchers earned the loss.
South Alabama took the lead in the first on a two-run homer by third baseman Brendan Donovan.
Southeastern cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on Avans' 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.
The Jaguars strung together three consecutive two-out singles in the second, taking a 3-1 advantage.
Taylor Schwaner put Southeastern up, 4-3, with a three-run blast to right in the bottom of the inning.
Hunter Stokes put South Alabama back on top in the third, knocking a two-run homer to right.
After giving up a one-out single to Avans in the bottom of the third, Melton walked
Kyle Schimpf,
Mike Taylor and Pace to driving in the tying run. Two batters later, Schwaner dropped a single into to right, driving home a pair for a 7-5 lead.
The Jaguars pulled within a run in the fourth, 7-6, but a solo homer by
Nathan Pilutti and an RBI single by Taylor extended the Southeastern lead. The homer was Pilutti's first as a Lion.
After Warren retired the side in order in the fifth, the first scoreless frame of the game, catcher
Daniel Wasinger led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to right.
South Alabama added a run in the sixth before retiring the Lions in order in the bottom half of the inning, and then scored a pair of runs in the seventh, cutting the Southeastern lead to 10-9.
Schwaner plated an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly and
Trenon Trosclair singled in Avans in the eighth for the final margin of victory.
Tassin held the Jaguars scoreless in the eighth and ninth to close out the game.
The Lions broke the school record for stolen bases in a single season. Taylor tied the record (125), established in 1992, in the fourth and Schwaner broke it in the fifth. Southeastern, which has eight players with double-digit steals, ranks third nationally with 127 stolen bases.
