HAMMOND, La. – A record-setting season has helped Southeastern Louisiana junior guard
Marlain Veal collect a multitude of awards in 2017-18.
Veal picked up his latest honor on Saturday by being named to the 2017-18 Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Men's College Basketball Second Team.
It is the second time the New Orleans, Louisiana native has been named All-Louisiana after being an honorable mention selection in 2016-17. He is the first Lion to be earn second team honors since Brandon Fortenberry since 2012-13.
Previously this postseason, Veal has been named to both the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 23 and All-Southland first teams. He was selected as the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year and named to the Southland Conference All-Defensive Team. He was also an All-Southland Conference Tournament Team selection and a two-time Southland Player of the Week during the regular season.
Veal helped lead Southeastern to a share of the Southland title and its first National Invitation Tournament bid in 2017-18. He was second on the team in both scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (5.3 rpg). He led the Southland with 6.1 assists per game and was second with 2.1 steals per game during the regular season while ranking fourth with a 1.8 assist/turnover ratio. His 207 assists in the regular season were a Southeastern record while his 66 steals were the second-most ever by a Lion. He had a conference-high five double-digit assist games and he averaged 20.5 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds over two Southland Tournament games.
UL-Lafayette senior guard Frank Bartley earned LSWA Player of the Year honors. LSU point guard Tremont Waters was the overwhelming choice as the state's Freshman of the Year with Roddy Peters of Nicholls the overwhelming choice for Newcomer of the Year. UL-Lafayette's Bob Marlin was named the state's Coach of the Year.
Joining Bartley, Peters and Waters on the first team were Tulane's Melvin Frazier and Stevie Clark of LSU Shreveport. Named to the second team along with Veal were Jacobi Boykins of Louisiana Tech, Stevie Clark of LSU Shreveport, Grambling's Ivy Smith, Jr., Bryce Washington of UL-Lafayette and Jordin Williams of LSU Alexandria. UL-Lafayette's JaKeenan Gant, Centenary's Travion Kirkendoll, Brandon Moss of LSU Alexandria, Travis Munnings of ULM and Joshua Simmons of Dillard were third team selections.
