HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana scored in six of its eight trips to the plate Friday, running away with a 10-1 Southland Conference win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Kyle Schimpf, a junior from Covington, Louisiana, led off the second inning with a single up the middle for the Lions (23-10, 10-3).
Mike Taylor followed with a triple into the gap in right-center field, driving in Schimpf.
The next batter,
Taylor Schwaner, smacked a two-run homer to left, putting Southeastern up, 3-0. Schwaner has now mashed a home run in each of the Lions' last two games.
Drew Avans picked up a one-out walk in the third inning and then stole second base. After Schimpf drew a walk, the Islanders attempted to pick him off at first. The pickoff throw from Islander starting pitcher Dustin Lacaze sailed down the right-field line and Avans scored from second.
A&M-Corpus Christi picked up an unearned run in the fourth, but the Lions responded with three to extend their lead to 7-1.
With Schwaner on third and
Brennan Breaud on first, the Lions executed a double steal to pick up their next run in the fifth.
Schwaner scored again in the seventh. After being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, he advanced to third on
Daniel Wasinger's double down the line in right. Breaud plated Schwaner with a sac fly to right.
Southeastern completed the scoring in the eighth on Avans' solo home run to left. It was his team-leading fifth of the season.
Josh Green (5-1) earned the win, allowing one unearned run in six innings. He scattered five hits and struck out three.
Bryce Tassin retired all nine batters he faced, striking out five, to earn his fourth save of the season.
Lacaze (2-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs – three earned – in four innings.
Schimpf (2-for-3) led the Lions at the plate, driving in a pair and scoring a run. Schwaner was officially 1-for-1 at the plate, but scored three runs and drove in a pair.
Saturday at 2 p.m., the Lions will send redshirt junior right-hander
Carlisle Koestler (5-1, 2.33), the Southland's ERA leader, to the mound opposite A&M-Corpus Christi junior righty Aaron Hernandez (1-4, 4.04).
