3/17/2018 8:42:00 PM

LAFAYETTE, La. – Senior Devin King's record-setting performance in the pole vault headlined another day of high finishes and personal bests for Southeastern Louisiana at the Louisiana Classics Saturday at the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Complex.

King broke a 20-year-old facility record in winning with a vault of 18 feet, 1. 75 inches. The previous mark was 18.00.5 set by Greg Duplantis in 1998.

King's victory, the 24th of his career, was one of 17 top five finishes by the Lions and Lady Lions on the day.

"We had an outstanding day," Southeastern head coach Corey Mistretta said. "It was really, really good. The kids, just as we expected, went there and stepped up and we had some outstanding performances today."

Sophomore Ashley Davis got her ninth career individual victory after capturing the shot put with a mark of 49-04.5.

Junior Stevon Crooks took second in the shot put with a mark of 55-01.5. Crooks earlier threw a personal-best 158-05 for fifth in the discus.

Sophomore Grant O'Callaghan shattered his previous best in the 800 meters by 3.34 seconds with a second-place time of 1 minute, 52.23 seconds. Also setting personal bests in the event were freshman Jonathan Respress who was fourth in 1:52.54, and senior Tajh Lewis, who took sixth in 1:52.91. Former Lion Andre Colebrook, running unattached, won in 1:52.17.

"I don't know if we have ever had three guys on the same day run 1:52," Mistretta said. "Andre Colebrook came and ran unattached and pulled those guys through pretty fast."

Junior Brian Donna also had a career best, taking second in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.52 seconds. Sophomore Justin Taylor was fifth in 14.85.

Senior Albert Martinez added a runner-up in the 400 hurdles in 54.29 with sophomore Gerald Coleman sixth in 54.84. And freshman Adam Cortez ran a 15:26.96 for second in the 5,000.

Southeastern had four relays place in the top three. The men's 4x100 was second in 41.32. The 4x400 "B" team ran a season best in taking second in 3:16.83 while the "A" squad was third in 3:20.10. And the Lady Lions' "A" 4x400 relay came in third in 3:49.74.

Junior Rodney Ruffin, competing in his first meet since the indoor season opener, jumped 23-10 for fourth in the long jump.

"Another good thing for us was DJ Ruffin finally getting back competing after being injured for so long," Mistretta said. "He had a really good day. He had a full series of jumps all over seven meters in the long jump, which was really good, and ran a personal best in the 100 meters and also ran on the 4x400 for us. He's a special guy for us and we're super excited to have him back."

Freshmen Breanna Bernard (19:07.80) and Tara Stuntz (19:30.22) were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 5,000.

Senior Daijah Washington finished fifth in the 100 in 11.90 while junior De'Kayta Alex came in sixth in the 400 in 54.61.

Junior Jebarri Cumberbatch placed sixth in the 100 in 10.56.

Freshman Adam Pennington was seventh in the pole vault (15-02.25).

Sophomore Grace Walford took seventh in the discus (126-11).

Southeastern will next head to the Texas Relays, scheduled for March 28-31. The Lions and Lady Lions will also send a squad to the Southern Miss Invitational on March 31.
