HAMMOND, La. – The Scrambled Legz managed just two hits Sunday in Game 1 of the annual Heart of a Lion Fall World Series, but those base knocks drove in the tying and go-ahead runs on the way to a 3-1 win over the Swamp Donkeys at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
 
Striking early, the Swamp Donkeys (0-1) picked up a run in the first.
 
Second baseman Eli Johnson, a junior transfer from Chehalis, Washington, led off the game with a single through the left side. After stealing second base, Johnson scored on Kyle Schimpf's RBI single to center field.
 
The Scrambled Legz (1-0) tied the game in the bottom of the third.
 
Shortstop Brennan Breaud drew a two-out walk and scored from first on Preston Faulkner's double into the left-center field gap
 
Another two-out rally gave Scrambled Legz the lead in the fifth.
 
Second baseman Cade Pipoly was hit by a pitch. After stealing second, Pipoly scored on Breaud's RBI single up the middle.
 
An unearned run in the eighth padded the lead.
 
Left-hander Nick Flesher (1-0) scattered five hits over 6.2 innings of work to earn the win, surrendering just the first-inning run. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Kade Granier retired the side in the ninth to earn the save (1).
 
Trey Shaffer (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in 4.2 innings pitched. He surrendered a pair of hits, walked three and fanned five.
 
Johnson (2-for-3) and Schimpf (2-for-3, RBI) each turned in a multi-hit performance. Breaud (1-for-3, RBI), Faulkner (1-for-3, RBI), Connor Manola (1-for-4) and Nathan Pilutti (1-for-4) all picked up hits.
 
UP NEXT
The final two games of the intrasquad series are scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Admission is free. In the event of inclement weather, Wednesday is a rain day.
