SLU Returns Home for Battles with SFA and Sam Houston

Lady Lions Continue Race for Conference Tourney

10/11/2018 9:23:00 AM

HAMMOND, La. – After a phenomenal performance last week at Lamar, the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team returns home to face Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State this weekend at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-4-3, 2-2-2 in the Southland) are coming off a 0-0 tie at reigning conference champion Lamar who is 14-1-1 at home since the start of the 2017 season.

"It's always good to play a team like Lamar right in the middle of the season," said second year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "It shows us where we are currently in comparison with a top team in our conference."

Southeastern will look to build on that momentum Friday night when they host Stephen F. Austin (3-6-2, 1-3-2) at 6 p.m. for Student Spirit Night.

The first 100 students in attendance will receive an authentic soccer scarf to show off their school spirit. Fans are encouraged to attend the annual Homecoming bonfire at Cook Field adjacent to the University Center following the match.

SFA is coming off a loss to Central Arkansas 2-0 at home. However, the Lady Jacks have been extremely competitive throughout the conference season playing their previous three matches to overtime including losing in the final seconds of overtime to Lamar.

For SLU, Brogan Bernadas has come on strong the last two matches attempting three shots against Lamar and Houston Baptist. The freshman from Covington, Louisiana is second on the team with 23 shots attempted behind senior Christina Cutura (46).

Southeastern's back line has been terrific during conference led by senior Sofia Olsson, sophomores Jada Ellis and Tilly-Hallas Potts and freshman Claire Houston. Along with the spectacular efforts of sophomore goalkeeper Nadine Maher, the five have combined to allow just five goals in six Southland Conference matches including two shutouts.

After Friday's match with SFA, SLU will take on Sam Houston (2-8-3, 1-3-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. SHSU, like SFA, has been better than their record indicates. The Bearkats played league leading Houston Baptist and Lamar to ties.

"SFA and Sam (Houston) are both very good teams," said McBride. "These two teams record's don't speak for the quality of teams that they are. We know that it will be a very tough weekend for us and that we, once again, will need to be playing our best soccer if we want a positive result."
