HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana football team to its first win of the season, sophomore wide receiver/kick returner Juwan Petit-Frere was named one of the Southland Conference Football Players of the Week, presented by UniversalCoin.com, on Monday.
 
Petit-Frere was named the league's Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in last Saturday's 49-21 victory over Lamar. He is the second Lion to earn that distinction this season, joining senior defensive back/punt returner Max Lyons, who claimed the same award on Sept. 4.
 
Petit-Frere only had one opportunity versus the Cardinals, but he made the most of it. Late in the first quarter, he burst down the right sideline for a 92-yard kickoff return, which matched the longest of his young SLU career. The return set up a four-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Lorenzo Nunez to senior Juwan Dickey and gave the Lions a 21-7 lead.
 
In his first season out of Ellsworth Community College, Petit-Frere has quickly established himself as a weapon on kickoff returns. The Orlando, Florida native leads FCS with 494 kickoff return yards and his 38.0 yard per return average places him second nationally. He has posted kickoff returns of 79 yards or more in each of the past three games.
 
The conference also announced the Week 6 TV selections on Monday. The Lions' Oct. 7 Homecoming game versus Incarnate Word will be broadcast by the Southeastern Channel. The 4 p.m. game will be streamed on the Southland Digital Network at www.southland.org/live.
 
Petit-Frere and his Lion teammates travel to in-state league foe Northwestern State for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Saturday in Natchitoches. The game will be televised on Cox Sports Television and will also on ESPN3 outside of the CST viewing area.
