COMOX, British Columbia, Canada – Former Southeastern Louisiana golfer Horatio Leon captured medalist honors at the Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada's Canada Q-School on Friday.
Leon, who played for the Lions from 2009-12, shot a 19-under-par 269 to win by five strokes at Crown Isle Resort and Golf Community. The native of Santiago, Chile shot rounds of 66, 68, 65 and 70 to secure exempt status for the 2017 season. It was his first tournament since he went arthroscopic ankle surgery just over three months ago.
Leon played in 37 events on PGA Tour Latinoamerica in 2016 while also earning conditional status on the Mackenzie Tour. His brother Hugo, who played for Southeastern from 2003-07 and is a two-time winner on the Mackenzie Tour, earned conditional status at the USA East #2 Q-School earlier this year.
Horatio Leon was the Louisiana Newcomer of the Year in 2010 after helping Southeastern to the Southland Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. He was a third-team All-Southland selection in 2011 after again helping the Lions reach the NCAA Regionals.
Another ex-Lion, Grady Brame Jr., received exemption for the first eight events of the Mackenzie Tour after tying for 12
th at the Q-School held in Sebring, Florida in April. The Hammond, Louisiana native shot a 9-under 279 following rounds of 67, 71, 69 and 72 at the Sun 'N Lake Golf Club.
Brame was a first-team All-Southland selection in 2014 and '15 and a second-team pick in 2013. He was also a two-time All-Louisiana selection during his Lion career from 2012-15. He helped Southeastern capture the 2013 Southland Conference title and reach the NCAA Regionals in 2012, '13 and '15 while playing as an individual at the 2014 Regional. He tied for 14
th at the NCAA Lubbock Regional in 2015.
