Final Results
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team opened its final week of the 2017 season with a hard-fought defeat at the hands of Southland Conference foe Lamar Thursday night at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Southeastern fell to 3-15 overall and 0-10 in Southland Conference play with the loss. Lamar (14-7, 6-3 Southland) took the doubles point and five of six singles matches to earn the victory.
"We want to thank all the fans that came out and supported us tonight," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We're so appreciative of the support. We continue to fight hard and I'm proud of the effort or players are giving."
Lamar took the early lead with wins on the No. 1 and 3 doubles courts. The Cardinals would then win a straight-set decision on the No. 6 singles court to increase the lead to 2-0.
On the No. 1 court, Lamar's Katya Lapayeva held off a strong second-set rally by SLU junior
Fleur Holtkamp for a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory to put Lamar on the verge of clinching the victory.
Southeastern junior
Madina Vorotnikova gave the Lions their first point on the No. 2 singles court. Vorotnikova defeated Anna Spengler, 6-3, 6-1 to cut the lead to 3-1.
Lamar clinched the match on the No. 4 court, as Sanja Jolic outlasted SLU junior
Lucia Bustamante, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to give the Cardinals their fourth point of the match.
On No. 3, LU's Jasmin Buchta rallied past Southeastern junior
Dany Raygadas, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 10-8. Talisa Merchiers closed out the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over SLU junior
Natalie Duran.
Southeastern will close out the 2017 season on Saturday, hosting Sam Houston State at 12 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. The match will be the final career contests for Bustamante and Duran, who will both graduate early in December.
