HAMMOND, La. – Murray State's second batter of the game smacked a solo home run Sunday and No. 36-ranked Southeastern Louisiana never caught back up as the Racers held on for a 3-1 win in the Tangi Tourism Baseball Classic.
Right fielder Brandon Gutzler cranked the one-out shot to put Murray State (3-0) up, 1-0.
The Racers added their final two runs in the fifth.
Left fielder Adam Bauer drew a walk from Lion starting pitcher
Kade Granier (0-1) to open up the inning and shortstop Jaron Robinson followed with a single to left.
After Granier fanned center fielder Aaron Bence, catcher Kip Moore followed with an RBI single to left. Bauer scored and Robinson advanced to third base. Robinson scored on Gutzler's sacrifice fly to center field.
Southeastern (1-1) picked up its lone run in the bottom of the inning.
Right fielder
Webb Bobo, a senior from Prattville, Alabama, led off with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a ground out to short. He scored on
Drew Avans' infield single to first.
Murray starting pitcher Austin Dubsky (1-0) picked up the win, holding the Lions to one run on three hits in six innings of work. He walked four and struck out four batters. Chad Gendron earned his first save, working a scoreless ninth.
Granier suffered the loss. The junior from Destrehan, Louisiana, allowed three runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. The right-hander walked three and fanned two batters.
Taylor Schwaner was once again the Lions' leading hitter. The junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.
Southeastern faces No. 13-ranked UL Lafayette at 6 p.m. Monday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field to wrap up the Tangi Tourism Baseball Classic. Fans attending the rescheduled contest with UL Lafayette should use their ticket from Friday's originally scheduled contest to gain admittance.
