JACKSON, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions will look to bounce back from a 4-1 season-opening loss at Memphis Friday night when they travel to Jackson State for a 1 p.m. non-conference match Sunday at the JSU Soccer Complex.
Southeastern (0-1) came away with a number of positives from the loss. Sophomore
Vanessa Arzaluz scored the Lady Lions' goal while senior
Hope Sabadash made seven saves. Southeastern had 16 shots in the match, six on goal. Junior
Maggie Ramsey had four shots while sophomore
Payton Colson, a native of Flowood, Miss., had three.
Jackson State (0-0), meanwhile, will be playing its season opener after its scheduled match Thursday at Stephen F. Austin was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Lady Tigers, who shared the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title in 2015, will be playing their first match under head coach Stephen Peck.
Jackson State returns a number of key players from last season's 11-7-2 squad, led by sophomore Faith Toennies, the reigning SWAC Co-Freshman and Goalie of the Year. Also returning are senior defenders Kyleigh Io and Sie'Yara Wells, senior midfielder Jalana Ellis and junior forwards Jessica Blair and Brianna Oswald.
Southeastern is 6-0 all-time versus Jackson State. The Lady Lions took a 2-0 win at home in the season opener in 2015. Current Lady Lion senior
Marisa Rodrigues had a goal and Ramsey an assist while Sabadash made three saves.
Southeastern will host Arkansas State in its home opener Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
