BEAUMONT, Texas – Jameson Fisher and
Carson Crites smacked back-to-back doubles leading off the eighth inning, while
Domenick Carlini and
Josh Green combined to shut down the Lamar bats Sunday in Southeastern Louisiana's 2-1, Southland Conference win at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Southeastern (35-13, 21-3 Southland) completed the series sweep of Lamar (31-15, 16-8 Southland), extending its winning streak to seven-consecutive games overall and 21 straight conference series.
The Lions scored first Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Right fielder
Webb Bobo knocked a one-out single through the left side. After stealing second base, Bobo scored on
Jacob Seward's two-out single to center field.
The Cardinals tied the game up with an unearned run in the third.
Designated hitter Ryan Erickson reach on a fielding error by Lion shortstop
Brennan Breaud to lead off the inning. After a pair of singles loaded the bases, Erickson scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of cleanup batter Reid Russell.
Carlini was locked in a duel with Lamar pitchers Jimmy Johnson and Travis Moore all game, setting the scene for the pair of eighth inning doubles.
Southeastern had a chance in the sixth to break the game open. Johnson, tiring, walked three straight batters to load the bases with one out, but Moore fanned back-to-back batters, both looking, to end the Lion threat.
Green had a chance to return the favor in the eighth, inheriting a two-out, two-on situation, the sophomore right-hander induced a ground ball to third base to end the inning. He fanned a pair in the ninth, retiring the side in order, to earn his second save of the series.
Carlini (6-1), who allowed one unearned run in 7.2 innings, earned the win. The senior left-hander scattered six hits and a pair of walks, fanning six. Moore, who recorded four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief work, was tagged with the loss. The left-hander allowed one run, surrendering one hit and one walk.
Fisher (2-for-4) and
Ryan Byers (2-for-5) enjoyed multi-hit performances for the Lions.
Southeastern hosts the University of New Orleans for 2-of-3 games in a conference series this coming weekend. Friday and Sunday the Lions will play host to UNO at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, Southeastern's final two home games of the regular season. Saturday's game will be played at Maestri Field in New Orleans, Louisiana.
