HAMMOND, La. – With Lion pitchers allowing one run in the first two games of their series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, left-hander
Domenick Carlini was not to be outdone as he tossed a career-high eight scoreless innings Saturday in Southeastern Louisiana's 5-0 Southland Conference win over the Islanders at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (18-6, 9-0 Southland) picked up its 12
th straight win, setting the school record in the victory over A&M-Corpus Christi (9-13, 2-4 Southland). The win was the Lions' 13th straight in conference play, breaking the Southland record for consecutive conference wins which Southeastern tied with a separate streak last season. Southeastern has won 25 of its last 26 regular-season conference games and 36 of its last 41 in Southland action.
The Lions scored the only run they would need the sweep of A&M-Corpus Christi in the first inning.
Shortstop
Brennan Breaud drew a one-out walk off Islander starting pitcher Devin Skapura (1-3), advancing to third base on
Jameson Fisher's single to right field. After Fisher, a junior first baseman from Zachary, Louisiana, stole second base, designated hitter
Daniel Midyett plated Breaud with an RBI groundout to second.
Carlini (3-0) worked around base runners in the first, third, fourth and fifth before his teammates provided a little breathing room.
Jacob Seward kept the fifth inning alive with a two-out single up the middle, marking the Lions' first hit since Fisher's first-inning single. Breaud followed by smashing a ball into the right-center field gap, earning the freshman from Norco, Louisiana, the first triple of his career and an RBI.
The Islanders elected to intentionally walk Fisher before calling on reliever Nolan Holland. Midyett greeted the right-hander with an RBI single up the middle, driving in Breaud. With Fisher attempting to go first-to-third on the play, A&M-Corpus Christi center fielder Zack Gibson uncorked a throw that sailed wide of third base and into the Lion dugout. Fisher scored on the error, and Midyett advanced all the way to third.
Southeastern added its final run in the sixth.
Right fielder
Julian Service singled up the middle leading off the inning. He stole both second and third, scoring when catcher Lukas Hermanson sailed his throw to third down the line into shallow left.
Carlini scattered five hits in earning the win. The senior from Nesbit, Mississippi, walked three and fanned six in his eight innings of work. Freshman left-hander
Payton Robinson stranded an inherited runner in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced and striking out one. Skapura was tagged with the loss.
The shutout was Southeastern's fourth of the season and, coupled with Friday's 4-0 win over A&M-Corpus Christi, marks the first time the Lions have tossed back-to-back shutouts since early in the 2007 season.
Midyett, who turned in the only multi-hit performance of the game, was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
Southeastern steps out of Southland Conference play this coming week, hosting Southern at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Alcorn State at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
