HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team swept a Southland Conference doubleheader from Incarnate Word, 4-2 and 9-0, Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (10-6, 3-0 Southland) jumped in front quickly in the first game, plating a pair of first-inning runs. The Lions smashed four extra-base hits, including
Jameson Fisher's fifth home run of the season.
In the second game, the Lions chased the UIW (3-12, 0-3 Southland) starting pitcher in the fourth inning as they coasted to a doubleheader and series sweep
The Lions swept their conference-opening series for the first time since the 2013 season when they defeated Northwestern State in 3-straight games, 3-2, 7-4 and 3-2, March 22-24, in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Southeastern wraps up a 4-game homestand Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, hosting South Alabama at 6 p.m. for Local Heroes Night. All first responders will receive free admission if they attend in uniform or present a valid ID.
Game One - Southeastern 4, Incarnate Word 2Southeastern jumped out in front early, plating a pair of first-inning runs on the strength of a pair of extra-base hits.
Jacob Seward, a junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, led off the Lion half of the first with a double to right field. UIW starting pitcher John Shull (0-1) then hit shortstop
Brennan Breaud with a pitch, putting runners at first and second with no outs.
After Breaud was erased on a double play, Seward scored on
Carson Crites' RBI triple into the left-center field gap. Designated hitter
Daniel Midyett followed with an RBI single through the left side to drive in Crites for a 2-0 lead.
UIW would tied up the game with single runs in the second and third innings, the first of which came on catcher Christian Divelbiss' solo home run to right.
With the game tied, 2-2, Fisher led off the third with a solo blast to right for his fifth home run of the season.
In the fourth inning, left fielder
Ryan Byers drew a 1-out walk and scored on Breaud's 2-out double to right-center.
Left-hander
Payton Robinson (1-0), a freshman from Mobile, Alabama, earned the win with three perfect innings of relief. He entered the game in the fifth with runners on the corners and no outs, working out of the jam without allowing a run.
Drew Avans and
Derrick Mount each worked a scoreless inning in relief with Mount earning his second save of the season.

Game Two - Southeastern 9, Incarnate Word 0Southeastern bunched all of its runs together in a 4-inning stretch during the series finale.
Seward doubled down the first-base line to lead off the third inning, advancing to third on Breaud's infield single to second base. Fisher drove home Seward with an RBI single to right. Right fielder
Webb Bobo later plated both Breaud and Fisher with a 1-out single to left, putting the Lions up 3-0.
In the fourth, third baseman
Taylor Schwaner knocked a 1-out double down the left-field line and then scored on Seward's second triple of the weekend. After Breaud drew a walk, Fisher plated Seward with a sacrifice fly to right. Breaud then scored on a wild pitch, making it 6-0 Lions.
Bobo smashed a leadoff home run to straight-away center in the fifth and Midyett blasted a 2-run shot to right in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Domenick Carlini (2-0), a senior from Nesbit, Mississippi, earned the win after scattering three hits in six shutout innings of work. He walked three and fanned eight.
Carlo Graffeo,
Gabe Von Rosenberg and
Kade Granier, the reigning Louisiana Pitcher of the Week, each worked a scoreless frame to close out the contest.
