HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana wiped out an early Troy lead, pulling away from the Trojans down the stretch for a 7-2 win Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (4-3) pitching was dominant all series, allowing just six earned runs. Lion pitchers fanned 42 Troy (7-1) batters, the most in a 3-game series since Southeastern fanned 40 against Northwestern State during the 2008 season (March 20-22).
Domenick Carlini (1-0) did his part to earn the win Sunday, limiting the Trojans to a pair of first-inning runs and scattering five hits in seven innings of work. He walked three and struck out nine.
Leading off the second inning, Troy second baseman Peyton Fuller ripped a sinking liner into the right-center field gap, but Lion center fielder
Jacob Seward hauled it in with a driving grab.
After Carlini settled in, the Lion bats went to work on Troy starting pitcher Evan Hebert (1-1).
Daniel Midyett,
Julian Service and
Ryan Byers knocked back-to-back-to-back singles opening up the second inning, with Byers driving in Midyett on a chopper up the middle.
Chris Eades plated Service, to tie the game, with a ground out that kicked off Hebert's glove to the shortstop.
Southeastern took the lead in the fifth with an unearned run.
Second baseman
Taylor Schwaner, a sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana, reached on a throwing error by Trojan third baseman Bert Givens, advancing to second on the play. Two batters later Seward, a junior from New Orleans, chopped an RBI single over the head of first baseman Joey Denison.
The Lions padded their lead in the sixth.
Byers reached on a 1-out single, later advancing to third on a 2-out single by second baseman
Carson Crites. Shortstop
Brennan Breaud, a freshman from Norco, Louisiana, then slapped a single through the left side to plate Byers.
Southeastern added another unearned run in the seventh to go up 5-2 over the Trojans.
Troy threatened in the eighth against the Lion bullpen. The first two batters of the inning greeted right-hander
Corey Gaconi, a freshman from New Orleans, with back-to-back singles before he got Denison to fly out to center.
Southeastern head coach
Matt Riser brought sophomore left-hander
Drew Avans out of the pen to face Troy's cleanup hitter, left-handed hitting Reid Long. With Seward swung around playing him to pull, Long rocketed a ball toward the left-center gap. Byers covered a good chunk of real estate to make the Lions' second diving grab of the game, almost doubling off the runner at second with a strong throw from his knees.
Avans walked the next batter to load the bases, but fanned Troy designated hitter Justin Friend looking at three-consecutive breaking pitches to end the threat.
The Lions added a pair of unearned runs in the eighth to finish off the scoring and Avans retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Byers, junior third baseman
Derrick Mount, Service and Seward each turned in 2-hit performances, with Seward also driving in a pair.
