HAMMOND, La. – Troy scored four unearned runs Saturday as the Trojans took advantage of multiple Southeastern errors in a 5-1 win over the Lions at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (3-3) committed three errors in the sixth inning, allowing Troy (7-0) to take the lead with three unearned runs.
Southeastern took an early lead, pushing across a run in the first inning off Trojan starting pitcher Lucas Brown (2-0).
Center fielder
Jacob Seward, a junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, beat out a bunt single to open up the Lion first. He advanced to second on
Daniel Midyett's 2-out walk. Right fielder
Webb Bobo, a junior from Prattville, Alabama, followed with an RBI single to right.
Troy designated hitter Justin Friend tied the game with a 2-out solo home run to right field in the fourth, breaking a string of 8-in-a-row retired by Lion starting pitcher
Mac Sceroler (1-1).
After Sceroler surrendered back-to-back singles to open the sixth inning, Southeastern head coach
Matt Riser brought in freshman
Payton Robinson to face Friend. The left-hander from Mobile, Alabama, struck out Friend looking, but the Lions committed errors on three of the next four plays.
The Trojans pushed across another unearned run in the ninth.
Sceroler was the hard-luck loser, surrendering three runs (one earned) on seven hits in five innings of work. He walked one and fanned a career-high 10 batters.
Brown earned the win, limiting the Lions to one run on six hits in seven innings of work. He walked three and fanned four. Trey Johns picked up his first save of the season with a pair of perfect innings in relief.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. with Family Day. Roomie's Kid Zone will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities. Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game.
