HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana placed three student-athletes on the 2016 Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana Collegiate Football Teams, which were released by the LSWA on Saturday.
Representing SLU on the first team were senior offensive lineman
Taylor Gadbois and senior fullback
Juwaan Rogers. Junior defensive back
Javon Tillman earned second team honors.
Gadbois, a native of Dallas, Georgia, added to his list of postseason accolades. Following his first season after transferring from Miami (Fla.), Gabois earned first team All-Southland Conference and third team Associated Press All-America. Gabdois took over as a starting tackle for the Lions early in the season and Southeastern was 7-1 in games in which he started.
Rogers, who hails from Amite, Louisiana, was honored after establishing himself as one of the top h-backs in the Football Championship Subdivision. A first team All-Southland Conference selection, the Amite, Louisiana native was the team's top run blocker and caught touchdowns in wins over McNeese, Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian.
Rounding out Southeastern's All-Louisiana contingent was Tillman, who established himself as a playmaker in the secondary after receiving a medical redshirt in 2015. A second team All-Southland pick from Oakland, California, Tillman led SLU with 89 tackles, ranking seventh in the Southland Conference. The first-year starter also shared the league lead with three forced fumbles.
Louisiana Tech senior quarterback Ryan Higgins was named the state's Offensive Player of the Year, while LSU senior linebacker Kendell Beckwith earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Louisiana-Lafayette defensive end Joe Dillon was tabbed Louisiana Freshman of the Year, while Newcomer of the Year honors went to McNeese quarterback James Tabary. Grambling's Broderick Fobbs was selected the LSWA Coach of the Year.
The LSWA All-Louisiana Collegiate Football Teams and the individual awards were voted on by the state's media and sports information directors. SID's were not allowed to vote for their own players.
The Lions will open spring practice on March 7 to begin preparations for the 2017 season, which opens on Sept. 2 with a non-conference contest at Louisiana-Lafayette.
