PENSACOLA, Fla. – Southeastern Louisiana juniors
Dany Raygadas and
Ceci Mercier teamed to win the No. 2 doubles flight to highlight the Lion tennis team's performance at the UWF Fall Fling, which wrapped up on the University of West Florida campus this weekend.
Raygadas and Mercier are the third Southeastern team to win a doubles championship this fall at the three different tournaments SLU has participated in. Juniors
Dalina Dahlmans and Fleur Holkamp, as well as the team of juniors
Lucia Bustamante and
Natalie Duran, both also have doubles titles in 2016.
The No. 2 doubles flight final was an all Southeastern affair. Raygadas and Mercier topped a pair of teammates in junior
Madina Vorotnikova and freshman
Sarah Eutinger, 6-2, to take the tournament.
In singles play, several Lions had standout performances. Dahlmans reached the finals of her bracket, while Mercier and Eutinger each reached the semifinals of their respective brackets.
For head coach
Jason Hayes, it was the progress the team made off the court that was the big takeaway from the weekend competition.
"We had some good results, but the most important thing we gained this week is that we became closer as a group," Hayes commented. "Staying in a house together as opposed to a hotel really bonded our team and it was enjoyable watching that transformation. We have to be together as a team to be successful this spring, so this trip helped up immensely."
Southeastern will close out the fall on Nov. 4-6, hosting the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational in Hammond.
