Southeastern Continues Conference Play On The Road

Lions travel to Houston Baptist, Sam Houston State

HOUSTON, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana continues Southland Conference play with a pair of road games Saturday at Houston Baptist and Monday at Sam Houston State.

Tipoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Sharp Gym and 6:30 p.m. Monday at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.

Southeastern (2-12, 0-1 Southland) has won both conference matchups against HBU (7-7, 2-0) in the history of the series. Sam Houston (7-8, 2-0 Southland) has 27 wins in the 42 games it has played against the Lions.

Last time out the Lions opened Southland play by dropping an 89-69 decision to Stephen F. Austin (9-5, 2-0 Southland) this past Monday at the University Center.

Hammond, Louisiana, native Zay Jackson, one of five Lions with double-digit points, scored 14 to lead Southeastern in the contest. Jordan Capps (13), Joshua Filmore (13), Marlain Veal (11) and Moses Greenwood (10) were the other leading scorers for the Lions. Veal led the squad with a career-high seven rebounds.

One of the top shooting teams in the Southland, Southeastern shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the floor against the Lumberjacks. The Lions converted 30 percent (6-of-20) of their shots from 3-point range, were 23-of-33 (69.7 percent) from the free throw line and got out-rebounded, 34-29.

Jackson leads Southeastern in scoring this season with an average of 12.4 points per game and is fourth in the Southland Conference with 4.5 assists per game. Filmore (9.7 ppg) and Greenwood (6.9 ppg), a freshman from Sharon, Mississippi, round out the Lions' top healthy scorers.

This season Southeastern is shooting 44.2 percent (329-of-744) from the floor which ranks fifth in the Southland. The Lions have hit 32.6 percent (88-of-270) from 3-point range, are 196-of-319 (61.4 percent) from the free throw line and have been out-rebounded by opponents, on average, 36.2-to-33.2 per game.

HBU is coming off an 82-73 conference win over McNeese State (2-10, 0-2 Southland) this past Tuesday.

Reigning conference player of the week Anthony Odunsi (15.9 ppg, 3.9 rebounds per game), Josh Ibarra (10.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Colter Lasher (9.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Reveal Chukwujekwu (8.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg) are the Huskies top players.

This season HBU is shooting 46.6 percent (388-of-833) from the floor to lead the Southland. The Huskies have hit 34.6 percent (74-of-214) from 3-point range, are 241-of-340 (70.9 percent) from the free throw line and have been out-rebounded by opponents, on average, 42.0-to-38.2 per game.

Sam Houston, which hosts the University of New Orleans (5-7, 1-0 Southland) Saturday, is coming off a 94-79 conference win at Northwestern State (3-9, 0-2 Southland).

Aurimas Majauskas (14.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg), Dakarai Henderson (13.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg), Jamal Williams (9.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and Torry Butler (7.3 ppg, 7.1 rpg) are the Bearkats top players.

This season Sam Houston is shooting 42.2 percent (394-of-933) from the floor, including 33.0 percent (117-of-355) from 3-point range. The Bearkats are 233-of-352 (66.2 percent) from the free throw line and have out-rebounded opponents, on average, 39.1-to-35.5 per game.

Southeastern returns to the University Center, Jan. 16, to host Incarnate Word as part of a conference doubleheader.
