HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University has named long-time PGA golf professional Jake Narro as the new head golf coach, SLU Director of Athletics
Jay Artigues announced on Wednesday.
Narro will officially start on Aug. 31 and his hire is pending approval of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. Narro takes over for long-time SLU head golf coach Tim Baldwin, who accepted the same position at Louisiana-Monroe last month.
"Jake brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to our golf program," Artigues commented. "He will be a good role model for our student-athletes. We expect Jake to continue the tradition of excellence in the classroom and competition that our golf program has established."
Narro takes over a program that has been established as one of the elite programs in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. The Lions have advanced to the NCAA Regionals in five of the last six seasons.
"I'm extremely excited to be named the head golf coach at Southeastern Louisiana University," Narro said. "I believe the future of our program is extremely bright. We will continue to recruit great players, who can help us succeed on the course, in the classroom and in the community."
Narro comes to SLU after most recently serving as the golf pro at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. Narro has also served as a professional at the Bayou Oaks Golf Club, Lakewood Country Club, Riverlands Country Club and Beau Chene Golf and Racquet Club.
As a player, Narro has twice been named the Gulf States Section Player of the Year (2003 and 2012). During his career, Narro has won six Gulf States Section championships (2000, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2014).
Narro, who earned his degree in general studies from SLU in 2014, has family ties to Southeastern. His wife, Dr. Amber Narro, is an associate professor in the SLU Department of Languages and Communication, while one of his five children, Shayne, is a SLU student. The Narros are also the parents of Alex, Blane, Harris and Olivia.
"Southeastern has been important to our family for a long time," Narro said. "We're extremely excited to join the Southeastern Athletics family. We already bleed green and gold."
Narro's new team will open the 2015-16 season on Sept. 14-15 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
