HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team will officially open its 2015 schedule this week with a pair of non-conference matches.
The Lady Lions will open the season on Friday, hosting Jackson State at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. Admission to all Southeastern home soccer matches is free.
LionVision subscribers will be able to access a live video stream of Friday's match at
www.LionSports.net. On Sunday, SLU opens the road portion of its schedule with a 3 p.m. match at Mississippi Valley State.
Southeastern put together an impressive debut in Saturday's 2-0 exhibition victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. After a scoreless first half, freshman
Sofia Olsson and senior
Gisenia Utreras each found the net to give SLU the exhibition win. Versus Louisiana-Lafayette, junior goalkeeper
Hope Sabadash finished with six saves to earn the shutout.
The Lady Lions return the top eight scorers from last season's team. Leading the way is junior
Bri Singh (13 goals in 2014), who led the Southland Conference in scoring last season. Sophomore
Maggie Ramsey (7 goals, 8 assists), senior
Kayla Vera (7 goals), Utreras (5 goals, 5 assists), junior
Katie Noonan (2 goals, Southland-high 10 assists) and senior
Cheyenne Maxwell (5 goals) are the other top returning scorers.
Sabadash and junior
Casey Jeanfreau are both back in goal after helping Southeastern finish with a 1.19 goals against average and eight shutouts. In all, SLU returns 21 letter winners and nine starters from its 2014 roster.
The Lady Lions will be looking to open the season with a victory over Jackson State for the second straight season. Last year, SLU picked up a 2-0 victory at JSU behind two goals from Singh.
Southeastern will also be looking to defeat Mississippi Valley State for the second straight season. Last season in Hammond, Singh scored two goals and Noonan finished with three assists in a 9-0 victory over the Delta Devilettes.
Following the opening weekend, Southeastern will travel to national power Florida State next Friday for a 6 p.m. (Central) match in Tallahassee, Florida. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
