NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team returns to action with a pair of midweek contests, Tuesday, at Tulane and Wednesday at home against Jackson State.
First pitch against Tulane (15-5) is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The Lions host Jackson State (12-7) in 6 p.m. hump day game for Campus Organization Night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Both games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and through either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Ryan Byers owns a team-best 17 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Seward, the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, and
Julian Service lead the team with 18 runs scored each.
The Lions are hitting a Southland-best .308 as a team and have been successful on 36-of-48 stolen base attempts, also tops in the conference. Southeastern is fifth nationally in walks (111), ninth in runs scored (152), hits (220) and on-base percentage (.416), and 11th in steals. The pitching staff has compiled a 3.73 ERA, fanning 170 batters in 183.1 innings pitched.
Tuesday the Lions will send junior right-hander
Pat Cashman (2-2, 1.96) to the mound against Tulane righty Patrick Duester (2-1, 0.46). The Green Wave defeated Southeastern, 5-4, in Hammond, Louisiana, on Feb. 18.
Stephen Alemais (.329), Hunter Hope (.297) and Hunter Williams (.264) lead Tulane at the plate. Alemais also leads the club with 18 runs scored, six doubles and nine stolen bases. Hope and Williams are tied for the team lead with three home runs apiece. Williams and Garrett Deschamp each own a team-high 11 RBIs.
The Green Wave are hitting .253 as a team, have been successful on 18-of-30 stolen bases attempts and have the second-most sacrifice bunts (28) in the nation. Tulane's pitching staff is ranked second nationally with a 1.64 ERA, having thrown the most shutouts (4) in the nation, and are surrendering the third-fewest hits (6.15 per nine innings) in the nation. They have fanned 149 batters in 181.1 innings of work.
Tulane swept a three-game series from Xavier this past weekend. Jackson State dropped 2-of-3 over the weekend at Alabama A&M.
The Tigers own a potent offense, averaging a nation-leading 9.1 runs per game. Their on-base percentage (.426) is the second-highest in the nation, and they are ranked seventh in walks (108) and eighth in HBPs (34). Jackson State's 40 stolen bases as a team are the sixth-most in the country.
Southeastern will send senior right-hander
Kyle Keller (1-0, 5.59) to the bump against the Tigers. The Lions defeated Jackson State, 19-10, in Jackson, Mississippi, on Feb. 17.
