HUMBLE, Texas – In his first tournament at a Lion, sophomore
James Anstiss posted a final round six-under par 66 to help Southeastern Louisiana move up to a sixth place finish in the Bayou City Collegiate, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Golf Club of Houston.
Anstiss' low card on Sunday helped him vault in to the tournament's top 10, where he was joined by senior teammate
Grady Brame. Brame posted an even-par 72 on Sunday, finishing tied for seventh with a tournament score of 213 (-3).
After shooting a 302 on Friday, SLU steadily improved as the tournament progressed. The Lions were at two-under par 286 on Saturday, before closing the tournament on a high note with a 281 on Sunday. Southeastern head coach
Tim Baldwin was proud of the way his team bounced back from Friday's struggles.
"We got off to a slow start on Friday," Baldwin said. "On Saturday, we played much better, but didn't finish strong on the final holes. Today was just a solid round for our team. James came up big for us today. Grady was good all week and was in the mix to win the whole thing, but just had some trouble finishing each round."
Baldwin was optimistic about the team's prospects this spring.
"We have a good team and we're excited about the things we can do this spring," Baldwin said. "We have to eliminate some of the mental mistakes, because we probably left 15 shots or so on the course this week. If we can clean some of those type of problems up, we're going to have a very good year."
Brame and Anstiss (-2, T10
th) were both in the top 10, but achieved their high finishes in different manners. Brame crushed the par-five holes during the tournament, finishing third among all players with a five-under par score on the course's longest holes. Conversely, Anstiss was one of only nine golfers in the tournament to post a subpar score on par 3's over the three-day competition.
Rounding out the Lion lineup were junior
Lawrence Allan (+3, T29th), junior
Eamon Bradley (+7, T47th) and sophomore
Paul Obermann (+16, 81
st). Bradley shook off Friday's 81 by shooting two-under par over the final 36 holes.
South Carolina finished 14-under par to win the tournament. Sam Houston State's Zach Cabra fired a tournament record low final round of 65 to earn individual medalist honors with a 208 (-8).
Southeastern will be back in action in a little over a week. The Lions will head to Lafayette to compete in the Louisiana Classics on March 2-3.
