Lady Lions tie Northwestern St., 1-1

Sabadash makes seven saves

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. –  The top two attacking teams in the Southland Conference lived up to their reputation Sunday afternoon as Southeastern and Northwestern State combined for 29 shots.

But the defenses - with an assist from the heavy rains that were nearly consistent throughout the match – were able to stave off all but two of them as the Lady Lions and Lady Demons played to a 1-1 tie in Strawberry Stadium.

Hope Sabadash made seven saves – her high for a Southland match this season - for Southeastern (10-4-3, 5-3-2). Brooke Bourbonais and Alex Latham had three each for Northwestern State (5-9-4, 2-5-3). Maggie Ramsey tied the match midway through the second half after Esdeina Gonzalez gave the Lady Demons a 1-0 lead late in the first half.

"I think defensively we did do some nice things," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "We closed down players at the right times, Hope Sabadash again made some quality saves and we were able to sustain some things on set pieces too. They are dangerous on corner kicks, set pieces and free kicks and we did a good job of closing those opportunities down. I thought on the attacking side, we had good opportunities we weren't able to finish."

Southeastern had opportunities in the overtime periods, out-shooting Northwestern State 7-0 in the two extra periods. In the first overtime, Gisenia Utreras sent a shot wide at the 97:23 mark. Bri Singh's header went high following a corner kick by Ana Zadro at 97:54 while Maddie Kresevic 's attempt went wide in the final 10 seconds.

Maggie Ramsey and Utreras both missed wide on shots in the early minutes of the second overtime. Latham then made a diving deflection of Ramsey's shot from the left wing at the 104:36 mark. Ramsey then missed wide right at 108:26. The Lady Lions defended away runs by Brittany Caserma and Gonzalez in the final 1:10.

Bourbonais stopped shots by Amber Lasher and Utreras in the first 10 minutes of the match. Utreras then beat Bourbonais but had her shot at the net deflected wide by Allison Palomo at the 15-minute mark. Bourbonais then stopped another shot by Lasher before Sabadash saved attempts by Sage Leffew and Gonzalez.

Sabadash stopped Shelby Drope's shot at 33:07. But with 2:48 left in the half, Gonzalez took a through ball from Jasmine Juarez and beat Sabadash with a shot to the upper right hand corner for her sixth goal of the season.

Cassandra Briscoe had a shot saved by Sabadash, then had another attempt blocked wide at 57:33. Latham saved an attempt by Zadro at 69:23. But less than two minutes later, Ramsey beat Latham to the right side of the next off a pass from Zadro to tie it at 1,

Sabadash saved shots by Camila Ardila and Gonzalez in the final 10 minutes of the half

Southeastern closes out the regular season at Nicholls State Friday at 3 p.m.
