Memphis Hands SLU First Loss

Lady Lions fall to 6-1 overall

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2014 season on Friday night, falling to Memphis, 3-1, at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Southeastern, which opened the season with a program-best 6-0 start, fell to 6-1 with the loss in its non-conference road finale. Memphis improved to 2-2-2 overall with the victory.

Junior Kayla Vera scored her third goal of the season for the Lady Lions off an assist from sophomore Bri Singh. SLU sophomore goalkeeper Hope Sabadash, an AWK Golden Glove Award candidate, finished the match with a career-high tying 11 saves.

"We started off well and were controlling the action in the first 25 minutes," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "We missed some chances to open the game up after that first goal and Memphis was able to take advantage. Overall we felt like we had a good game plan, but couldn't get that one goal to change the complexion of the match. We competed well against a very talented Memphis team and overall we were proud of the effort.

"Hope continues to be fantastic in goal," Hornbuckle added. "We were also very pleased with Chelsea Villaescusa and her play in 1-v-1 situations and ability to get us into the attack. Katie Noonan performed well on both ends of the field and her throw-in was a real weapon for us. Bri did a nice job controlling the ball and we were really pleased with how Kayla put continuous pressure on their defense."

Vera gave Southeastern the lead in the 11th minute. The Vancouver, Washington native took a feed from Singh and beat Memphis keeper Maryse Bard-Martel to put SLU up, 1-0.

Memphis evened the match in the 29th minute, as Emily Adamic put in a cross from Kylie Davis to tie the score. The Tigers took the lead for good less than four minutes later thanks to a free kick by Kaitlyn Davis. Sabadash turned away Valerie Sanderson's shot, but Diamond Simpson was right there to finish the deflection to put the Tigers up top.

Memphis added to its lead just over two minutes into the second half. Southeastern failed to clear a loose ball and Kaitlyn Davis gave the Tigers a two-goal advantage from six yards out.

Southeastern will be back in action on Monday, closing out its non-conference schedule with a 4 p.m. match at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. Southeastern students will receive free t-shirts and food.
