Lions Face Southland-Leader Nicholls State in Conference Series

Southeastern hosts series' Friday and Sunday games

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana faces Southland Conference-leader Nicholls State in a three-game conference baseball series Friday through Sunday.

The series will have games played on the campuses of both schools. Southeastern (27-19, 12-9 Southland) will host Friday and Sunday's games. Game times at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field are 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Nicholls (25-21, 15-6 Southland) will host Saturday's contest at Ray E. Didier Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The series opener is a $5 Friday at the ballpark. All general admission tickets are $5 and a concession stand special will also be available for $5 during the game.

Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale is a Geaux Pink game. The Lions will wear special hats and staff from Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center will be on hand to raise breast cancer awareness.

Fans will have a chance to enjoy the Raising Cane's Challenge at Sunday's contest. If the Lions score five or more runs in the game, fans presenting their ticket stub (or student coupon), and purchasing a combo at a participating Raising Cane's, will receive a free combo of equal or lesser value (through the following day).

Sunday's game is also Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring family-friendly activities (weather pending).

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can keep up with the series through live statistics or by following SLUathletics on Twitter. Streaming video is available on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream. Southeastern has dropped a season-high, six-consecutive games. The Lions, who are three games behind Nicholls, face an in-state opponent in each of their remaining 10 regular-season games.

Jameson Fisher (.349) Andrew Godbold (.333) and Brett Hoffman (.307) lead Southeastern at the plate. Godbold's six home runs lead the team and he is second in the conference with 40 RBIs. Brett Hoffman owns a team-high 14 doubles and his 29 RBIs are the second-most on the ballclub. Jacob Williams' 12 stolen bases leads the team.

The Lions are hitting .279 as team and have been successful on 73-of-113 stolen base attempts. Southeastern's pitching staff has compiled a 3.02 ERA, third-lowest in the Southland, fanning 316 batters in 407.2 innings pitched.

Sophomore left-hander Kyle Cedotal (2-2, 1.69) earns the series opening start for the Lions, drawing senior southpaw Taylor Byrd (7-2 1.54) for the Colonels. It will be the first conference starting assignment of Cedotal's career.

Saturday, the Lions will send sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux (6-4, 3.27) to the mound against Nicholls' sophomore lefty Grant Borne (6-2, 3.06). Senior right-hander Brandon Jackson (3-1, 1.80) gains the Sunday start for the Colonels. Southeastern has not announced a starter for the series finale.

Leo Vargas (.308) and Keith Cormier (.304) lead Nicholls at the plate. Cormier leads the squad with 11 doubles and 38 RBIs. He is also tied with Vargas for the team lead in home runs with two. Vargas has a team-high 13 stolen bases, having been caught just once this season.

The Colonels are hitting .246 as a team and have been successful in 54-of-70 stolen base attempts. Nicholls' pitching staff owns a conference-best 2.45 ERA and has fanned 339 batters in 422.2 innings pitched.

Nicholls' six-game winning streak was snapped this past Tuesday, 8-1, at Tulane.
