Lion Baseball Opens Eight-Game Homestand With Sacred Heart Series

Series opener is a $5 Friday game

HAMMOND, La. – After having the final game of its road trip postponed, the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team returns to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field Friday to host Sacred Heart in the opening contest of an eight-game homestand.

Game times for Southeastern's (7-4) weekend series with the Pioneers (2-2) are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

The series opener is a $5 Friday at the ballpark. All general admission tickets are $5 and a concession stand special, consisting of a selected entree and non-alcoholic beverage, will also be available for $5 during the game. Baseball-themed bingo is available at Saturday's game.

Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale is Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities (weather pending). Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game.

Fans will also have a chance Sunday to enjoy the Raising Cane's Challenge. If the Lions score five or more runs in the game, fans presenting their ticket stub (or student coupon), and purchasing a combo at a participating Raising Cane's, will receive a free combo of equal or lesser value (through the following day).

Friday and Sundays games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can keep up with the entire series through live statistics or by following SLUathletics on Twitter. Streaming video is available on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream, for all three games. Links for tickets, audio, stats and video are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern is coming a off a weekend series at Louisiana-Monroe in which it dropped each of the final two games of the series by one run, 6-5 and 3-2, after pounding out a 13-4 victory in the series opener. This past Wednesday's game at Louisiana-Lafayette was postponed until April 30.

Jameson Fisher (.476), outfielder Andrew Godbold (.351), infielders Jacob Williams (.326), Brett Hoffman (.317) and Kevin Carr (.310), and outfielder Kyle Cedotal (.300) lead Southeastern at the plate. Hoffman leads the team with six doubles and 16 RBIs, while Fisher has driven in 13 and Godbold has one home run to go with 11 RBIs.

The Lions entered the week hitting .291 as team and have been successful on 30-of-37 stolen base attempts, the second most in the nation. Southeastern's pitching staff has compiled a 3.03 ERA, fanning 82 batters in 98 innings pitched.

Junior right-hander Andro Cutura (2-0, 1.57) earns the series opening start for the Lions, drawing senior righty Kody Kerski (1-0, 1.50), the reigning Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week, for the Pioneers.

Saturday the Lions will send sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux (2-0, 1.50) to the mound against Sacred Heart left-hander Nick Leiningen (0-0, 5.40). Junior right-hander Kyle Keller (1-0, 1.59) draws the starting nod for Southeastern in Sunday's series finale opposite Pioneer southpaw Jeff Stoddard (0-0, 4.15).

Cutura and Scioneaux are two of just 43 pitchers at the Division I level to have turned in quality starts in each of their first three outings this season. Cal State-Northridge, Houston, Oregon State and UNLV are the only other schools to have multiple pitchers toss at least six innings, allowing three or fewer earned runs, in three-consecutive starts.

Freshman infielder Zack Short (.533) and sophomore outfielder Jayson Sullivan (.467) lead Sacred Heart at the plate through four games. Sullivan, who knocked a solo home run in the first inning Wednesday at LSU, owns the Pioneers' only homer and is tied with Dan Perez for the team lead in RBIs with four.

Sacred Heart is hitting .321 as team and has been successful on 2-of-3 stolen base attempts. The Pioneer pitching staff has compiled a 4.54 ERA, fanning 22 batters in 35.2 innings pitched.

Southeastern also hosts No. 15-ranked Ole Miss and Southland Conference foe Lamar, in addition to the Pioneers, during this season-high, eight-game homestand.
