Lions Knock Off Islanders, Grab Share Of First In Southland

Klotz earns second save of season

Box Score

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team came from behind to knock off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-3, Friday at Chapman Field to grab a share of first place in the Southland Conference.

Southeastern (13-8, 3-1 Southland) grabbed an early lead, scoring a run in the first inning. Jacob Williams singled with one out, moved up to third base on a pair of wild pitches and scored on Andrew Godbold's two-out single. The hit extended Godbold's hitting streak to nine games.

AMCC (10-14, 2-2 Southland) answered by scoring a pair of runs off Southeastern starter Andro Cutura (3-1) to take the lead. The Lions rebounded with another two-out run in the second to tie the game, 2-2.

Daniel Midyett knocked a one-out single and then swiped second base. With two outs, freshman Kennon Menard doubled to center field to drive in Midyett.

The Islanders didn't wait long to answer, taking back the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a passed ball.

Settling in, neither team scored in the third or fourth innings, but Southeastern bounced back with a pair of runs in the fifth. Jacob Seward led off the inning with a single up the middle. Menard sacrificed him to second and Kyle Cedotal doubled down the right-field line to drive in the tying run. Jacob Williams followed with a single to right-center which center fielder Kyle Danford misplayed, allowing Cedotal to score with the go-ahead run and give the Lions a 4-3 lead.

Scoreless relief pitching by Matt Pittari and Mason Klotz held the Islanders at bay until the Lions could tack on an insurance run in the ninth. Cutura earned the win, but had his quality start streak snapped after five-consecutive starts. Klotz earned his second save of the season. AMCC starter Matt Danton (4-2) was saddled with the loss.

Conference-leader Sam Houston State fell, 9-7, at Central Arkansas earlier in the evening, allowing the Lions to tie for the Southland lead.

Saturday Southeastern will send sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux (4-0, 1.53) to the mound in game two of the series against AMCC left-hander Trevor Belicek (0-4, 5.28).
