Southeastern Comes Up Short Against SFA

Scorching second half not enough for Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Despite a scorching second-half shooting effort, the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team came up short against Stephen F. Austin, 75-62, Saturday at the University Center. The Lumberjacks extended their overall win streak to 24 consecutive games.

Southeastern (11-16, 6-10 Southland) converted 10-of-14 second half shots (71.4 percent shooting) as it tried to wipe away SFA's (27-2, 16-0 Southland) 41-31 first-half advantage.

The Lumberjacks led by as much as 21 with 5:47 remaining in the game (70-49), but Southeastern finished the game on a 13-5 run.

SFA converted 10 of the 29 three-pointers it attempted, but the biggest difference in the contest was the 30 points the Lumberjacks scored off 18 Southeastern turnovers.

Seniors Antonnio Benton (18 points, eight rebounds) and Jeffery Ricard (12 points, eight rebounds) led the way for Southeastern. Onochie Ochie chipped in 11 points while Devonte Upson and senior Dre Evans each contributed eight points to the Lions' scoring efforts. Southeastern shot 57.6 percent from the floor (19-of-33) for the game.

Desmond Haymon led four Lumberjacks in double-figure scoring, including Deshaunt Walker (16), Jacob Parker (13) and Thomas Walkup (11), with 17 points. Nikola Gajic led all players with 10 rebounds. SFA shot 41 percent from the floor (25-of-61) for the game and out-rebounded the Lions, 32-28.

Southeastern concludes the regular season with a pair of games this coming week at Sam Houston State and Lamar.
