Box Score MONROE, La. – The University of Louisiana at Monroe rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday at Warhawk Field to defeat the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team, 6-5, and even the series at one game apiece.
Southeastern (7-3) had its five-game winning streak snapped as ULM (5-6) received five-plus innings of shutout relief from winning pitcher Chad Miller (2-0).
The Lions built a 5-0 lead through four innings, scoring three runs in the fourth after scoring unearned runs in both the first and third.
In the fourth,
Kevin Carr drew a one-out walk before
Jacob Seward singled through the right side of the infield. With two outs,
Kyle Cedotal walked to load the bases and then
Jameson Fisher tripled into the left-center field gap to drive in all three runners.
Lion starting pitcher
Tate Scioneaux cruised through the first five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters. In the sixth, however, the Warhawks broke through for three runs to tighten up the game.
Keelin Rasch knocked a one-out double to left-center before Chet Simoneaux reached on a throwing error by Southeastern shortstop
Jacob Williams. Justin Stawychny followed with a three-run home run to left-center, his second homer of the season. After two more singles, Scioneaux retired the final two batters of the inning.
Miller entered the game with two outs in the fourth and proceeded to shut down the Lion bats, allowing just two hits the rest of the way and striking out six.
In the eighth, Stawychny walked to lead off the inning against reliever, and losing pitcher,
Dylan Hills (0-1). Pinch hitter Cody Stone singled through the left side before Jeff Fuller bunted for a single to load the bases.
Southeastern went to the bullpen for
Mason Klotz, and after inheriting a bases loaded-no out situtation, he struck out the first two batters he faced. With two outs, though, Klotz hit Dalton Herrington to force in a run before Kodie Tidwell singled through the left side of the infield to drive in a pair and give ULM the lead, 6-5.
The rubber match of the series is scheduled for noon Sunday with junior right-hander
Kyle Keller (1-0, 0.82) drawing the starting nod for Southeastern against Warhawk righty Alex Hermeling (0-0, 1.50).
