Opportunistic Lions Grab 14-9 Win Over George Washington

Godbold, Hoffman each drive in four

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team took advantage of early wildness by George Washington hurlers, cruising to a 14-9 win over the Colonials and setting up a possible series sweep.

Southeastern (4-2) batted around in the first inning, chasing Colonial starting pitcher Max Kaplow (0-1) from the game before he recorded an out.

Kaplow walked Jacob Williams to begin the inning, hit Corey Bryan with a pitch and walked Jameson Fisher to load the bases. A wild pitch plated Williams before Andrew Godbold drove an RBI single to left, bringing home Bryan. Fisher scored on a wild pitch.

Jesse Buratt walked. Godbold and Buratt moved up on another wild pitch, and Kevin Carr drew a walk to chase Kaplow. Brett Hoffman greeted reliever Jordan Sheinkop with a two-run double to right field, driving home Godbold and Buratt. Gabe Woods drew a walk to once again load the bases before Jacob Seward plated Carr for the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center.

Hoffman added a two-run single in the second. Fisher doubled in Williams in the third. Buratt (groundout) and Carr (single) drove in runners in the fifth, but the big blow of the game was Godbold's first home run as a Lion. The right fielder blasted a three-run home run to left in the sixth, completing Southeastern's scoring.

GWU (1-2) broke through in the fourth when second baseman Owen Beightol knocked a solo homer to left off Tate Scioneaux (2-0), breaking a string of 9 2/3 scoreless innings by the right-hander to open the season.

Scioneaux earned the win, limiting the Colonials to the one run in six innings of work. He surrendered four hits, did not walk a batter, and fanned six.

The Colonials added unearned runs in the seventh and ninth, and put up six runs in the eighth, off the Southeastern bullpen.

Godbold recorded three hits for the second-straight game, driving in four. Fisher, Hoffman and Seward each picked up a pair of hits for the Lions.

Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale is Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities. Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game.

Junior right-hander Kyle Keller (0-0, 1.80) draws the starting nod for Southeastern. The Colonials have yet to name a starting pitcher for the contest.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps.
