Lions Observe Birthday Of Nation's First President By Hosting George Washington

Southeastern faces GWU in three-game series at The Pat

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team continues its current homestand this weekend at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field with a three-game series against George Washington, facing the Colonials on the birthday of the nation's first president.

Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., allowing fans to attend both the ballgame and the Krewe of Omega Mardi Gras Parade. The route of the parade, which begins Friday at 6:30 p.m., wraps around the ballpark on Dakota and North General Pershing Streets.

Saturday's game, which includes baseball-themed bingo, is slated for 2 p.m. The game also marks the 282nd birthday of GWU namesake George Washington.

Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale is Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities. Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game.

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can keep up with the series through live statistics or by following SLUathletics on Twitter. Streaming video is available on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream. Southeastern (2-2) dropped a 7-3 decision Wednesday in its home opener to No. 3-ranked LSU before a school-record crowd of 3,747.

Shortstop Jacob Williams (.467), catcher Jameson Fisher (.308), infielder Kevin Carr (.286) and infielder Brett Hoffman (.286) lead Southeastern at the plate. Carr, Fisher and Hoffman have each driven in a team-high three runs.

The Lions are hitting .248 as team and have been successful on 9-of-12 stolen base attempts. Southeastern's pitching staff has compiled a 3.65 ERA, fanning 24 batters in 37 innings pitched.

Junior right-hander Andro Cutura (0-0, 1.29) earns the series opening start for the Lions, drawing senior righty Luke Staub (4-6, 3.44 in 2013) for the Colonials.

Saturday the Lions will send sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux (1-0, 0.00), a member of the Southland's preseason All-Conference second team, to the mound against GWU southpaw Max Kaplow (2-4, 3.47 in 2013).

Junior right-hander Kyle Keller (0-0, 1.80) draws the starting nod for Southeastern in Sunday's series finale. The Colonials have yet to name a starting pitcher for the contest.

GWU (1-0), which defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-2, Wednesday in its home opener, had its season-opening series at UNC-Greensboro wiped out this past weekend by winter weather.

Freshman outfielder Andrew Selby (1.000-0-2) is the Colonials leading hitter after one game, while senior outfielder Owen Beightol (.282-2-30 in 2013) is the team's leading returner hitter from one year ago.

Last season, GWU hit .253 as a team with 10 home runs and 108 stolen bases. The pitching staff compiled a 4.38 ERA, fanning 320 batters in 497.2 innings pitched.

The Lions lead the all-time series, 1-0, having defeated GWU, 19-8, in Hammond on March 16, 1992.

Southeastern wraps up this five-game homestand Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Grambling State.
