NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball squad travels to New Orleans this weekend for a pair of games in the Tulane Tournament. The Lions face the Green Wave, Friday at 7 p.m., in a game that will be carried on ESPN3, and then wrap up their tournament appearance Sunday at 11 a.m. against Langston.
Southeastern (1-4) faces Tulane (3-1) for the first time since the 2003-04 season and the matchup against Langston (2-3) is the first in school history.
Both games, which will be played at Devlin Fieldhouse on the Tulane campus, can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone app. Fans can also keep up with the games with live statistics. The Lions split a pair of games with Tennessee Tech earlier this week that were also part of the tournament.
Joshua Filmore scored a career-high 27 points, Wednesday, and Southeastern outscored Tech by 35 in the second half on the way to an 86-65 win at the University Center.
Southeastern picked up its first win of the season and the first under head coach
Jay Ladner. Trailing, 48-34, at the half, the Lions outscored Tech, 52-17, in the final 20 minutes of action.
Zay Jackson (15.2 points per game),
DeVonte Upson (11.2 ppg), Filmore (10.2 ppg) and
Andrew Guillory (10.0 ppg) are the Lions' top scoring threats thus far. Jackson (3.6 assists per game) and Filmore (1.8 apg) have split time running the point. Upson is averaging a team-best 9.2 rebounds per contest.
The Lions are shooting 38.1 percent from the floor (111-of-291), 24.8 percent from three-point range (28-of-113) and 72.4 percent on free throws (63-of-87).
After dropping its season opener, 71-49, at Wake Forest, Tulane defeated Mississippi Valley State, Southern-New Orleans and Southern in one week's time.
Louis Dabney (12.0 ppg), Jay Hook (11.0 ppg) and Jonathan Stark (9.0 ppg, 4.5 apg) are the Green Wave's top offensive players. Tre Drye is averaging 5.8 rebounds per game and Dabney has 13 steals in four games.
Tulane is shooting 48.7 percent overall (109-of-224), 33.3 percent (26-of-78) from beyond the arc and 67.3 percent (68-of-101) at the charity stripe. The Green Wave haul in an average of 39 rebounds per contest.
Langston has dropped three straight after picking up a pair of wins to open the season.
Karon Abraham (17.7 ppg), Curtis Jones (13.3 ppg) and Terrell Jones (10.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg) are at the top of the Lions' stat sheet. As a team, they are shooting 47.2 percent overall (77-of-163), 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from three-point range and 55.7 percent (49-of-88) at the free-throw line. Langston hauls in an average of 36 rebounds per game.
After wrapping up its participation in the Tulane Tournament, Southeastern heads to No. 8-ranked Gonzaga, Tuesday, for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
