Southeastern Hosts Southland Newcomer Abilene Christian

Contest is first-ever hoops meeting between schools

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team hosts Southland Conference newcomer Abilene Christian Saturday at 2 p.m. in the first-ever hoops meeting between the two schools.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can also keep up with the game with live statistics or on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream. With Antonnio Benton and Jeffery Ricard back in the lineup Thursday for the first time in three games, Southeastern (6-8, 1-2 Southland) held off a late comeback attempt by Incarnate Word for a 76-72 Southland Conference win at the University Center.

JaMichael Hawkins led four Lions in double-digit scoring, pumping in 17 points. Joshua Filmore (12), Antonnio Benton (11) and Julian Chiera (11) all contributed double-digit points. Devonte Upson, who added nine points, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Southeastern.

This season, Hawkins (12.1 points per game) leads the team in scoring while Benton (11.4 ppg, 6.5 rebounds per contest) is the only other Lion scoring in double figures. Upson (9.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg) is sixth in the conference in rebounding.

As a team, the Lions are averaging 68.9 points, on 42.8-percent shooting, and 34.0 rebounds. Opponents are averaging 72.9 points, making Southeastern's scoring margin eighth-best in the conference. Dre Evans (3.0 assists per game) and Joshua Filmore (2.6 apg) have split time at the point directing the Lions' offense.

Abilene Christian (6-9, 0-1 Southland) had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday at the University of New Orleans, falling 87-81 to the Privateers.

Harrison Hawkins (19 points), Parker Wetnz (16 points) and LaDarrien Williams (15 points, nine rebounds) paced a Wildcat offense that was 28-of-63 from the floor (44.4 percent). Despite being out-rebounded by nine boards, ACU outscored UNO in the paint 41-28.

This season, Hawkins (11.1 ppg), Williams (11.1 ppg) and Wentz (10.6 ppg) are the main cogs in the team's offense. Austin Cooke, averaging 5.8 rebounds, is the Wildcats' top rebounder. ACU averages 69.3 points and 35 rebounds per contest.

Southeastern continues a  four-game, conference homestand with a pair of contests against Sam Houston State (Jan. 16) and Lamar (Jan. 18).
