HAMMOND – Abilene Christian senior forward Andrea Carpenter scored the match's only goal in the 54
th minute, as the Wildcats topped Southeastern Louisiana, 1-0, in Southland Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
The loss was the first in league play for Southeastern (8-2-1, 3-1 Southland), which had its streaks of four straight victories and six consecutive shutouts snapped. Abilene Christian bounced back from Friday's 3-1 loss at Nicholls, improving to 9-1-1 overall and 3-1 in Southland play.
Southeastern had some tough luck in the loss, as sophomore
Gisenia Utreras, senior
Kelsey Salcido, freshman Brianna Singh and sophomore
Casey Peacock each had near misses in the loss.
"We did a nice job of creating opportunities, but we simply couldn't find the net today," Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said. "
Erin Christ,
Shanyce Shaw,
Katie Noonan and
Alexsis Cable all played very well on the back line. We were also pleased with the efforts of Kelsey and
Amber Lasher in the midfield."
The game's lone goal was created by ACU senior midfielder Katherine Garner. Garner played a ball from along the left side and about 35 yards out. Carpenter and Southeastern freshman goalkeeper
Hope Sabadash both leaped for it and Carpenter was able to get enough of a head on it to get it over Sabadash. The ball bounced into the open net for the game-winner.
Southeastern will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, hosting Lamar at 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
