West Repeats As Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar

Joins Brett Bergeron, Matthew Carvell and Cedric Scotto as two-time honorees

NORMAN, Okla. – Southeastern Louisiana University golfer Rhys West was one of 152 Division I student-athletes named this week as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in an announcement by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

West, who earned All-America Scholar honors in 2012, joined former Lions Brett Bergeron, Matthew Carvell and Cedric Scotto as two-time honorees. The selection of West, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, marked the ninth consecutive season that a Southeastern player was named to the team.

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

On the course, West earned individual medalist honors for Southeastern in 2012-13 posting a 73.37 scoring average in 30 rounds of play. He posted four top-10 finishes on the season, including rallying from a one-shot deficit with two holes to play to post a two-shot victory at the Southland Conference Championships.

In the classroom, West twice was named to the Southland Conference All-Academic team, was selected three times to the Southeastern President's List and earned his Bachelor's degree in Finance in May.

"I'm real happy for Rhys," Southeastern golf coach Tim Baldwin said. "He really had to work hard his last two years. We put the (academic) numbers that he would need to earn All-America scholar honors in front of him. We always knew the golf was going to be there – the number of tournaments played, the stroke average. But he needed to work on his grades, so he worked really hard and joins a pretty good group of Southeastern players as a two-time selection."

A first-team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana selection, West helped lead Southeastern to its fourth Southland Conference title and its seventh appearance in the NCAA Regionals.
